A PERFORMANCE TRACK

HANDCYCLE

ITP 308
What is Track Cycling?
Characteristics of a Track Bike

• Fixed Gear

• No brakes!

• Light weight

• Frame geometry designed for

maximum power, not comfort.
Design Requirements

• Break into a new market by

designing a handcycle for use
on a velodrome.

• Requirements
• Lightweight
• Fixed gear
• Relatively easy to
manufacture
Final Design
Carbon Fiber Monocoque

• Frame is a carbon fiber monocoque.

• Unique design utilizes the high tensile strength of carbon fiber to reduce
material and cost in areas of high strain.

• Design follows typical standards used in the carbon fiber bicycle industry.
Wheel Set

• Carbon fiber rims

• Titanium hubs and

spokes

• Integrated driver
body for one piece
design.

• Sealed ceramic
bearings
Front Arm and Drivetrain

• Front Arm
• Made of 6061-AL
• Helps to cut down
cost.

• Drivetrain
• Utilizes a belt drive
system for safety
considerations.
• Uses components
that could be found
on bicycles so
replacing worn out
components is
relatively easy.
• Crank arms allow
for attachment of
pads.
Results and Future Changes

Results:
• Final weight of the hand cycle is 38.2lbs
• Track bikes typically are built to the competition minimum weight limit of 15
lbs.

Future Changes:
• Make the front arm a carbon fiber design.
• The hand cycle will need to be built by hand.
• Future design considerations will be made for ease of manufacture.
