Malik, A., Ahmad, M. A., & Cobb, J. P. (2015). Determining the Effect of Deprivation on
Quality of Life after Total and Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty. Open Journal of
Orthopedics, 5(06), 140.

Purpose:
To explore whether social deprivation affects health related quality of life (QoL) and knee
function after knee replacement

The key variables and their descriptive statistics :

1. Based on this study the outcome measures are EuroQol (EQ-5D), Townsend Score
(2001), Individual Deprivation Questions, The Oxford Knee Score, Imperial Knee
Score (IKS) and Cost Effectiveness.
2. EuroQol (EQ-5D) consists of two parts, the descriptive system and the EQ-visual
analogue scale (EQ-VAS). This measurement will assess pre and post surgery. For
descriptive system will be assesed five measurements; mobility, self-care, usual
activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. Every of them have three levels. In
addition, for EQ-VAS records self-rated health on a vertical analogue scale (0-100).
After that, applying formula and attached weight into each of health states, yet weight
is different between each other. The weightiest componenent is pain, followed by
mobility, anxiety/depression, self-care, and last are common activites like shopping or
housework. Eventually, final score ranges from -0.594 (a state worse than death) to +1
( a state of normality).
3. Townsend score is the frequently measurement use to assess material deprivation. The
difference from EuroQol (EQ-5D) is Towsend Score have equal points among
components which are unemployment, housing, over-crowding and car ownership.
Range of Townsend Score is from -3.17 to 13.27 with 13,27 is the most deprived area.
4. From Individual Deprivation Questions every patients will be asked related to
employment, house ownership, number of rooms/people in each house and car
ownership. This kind of questions is inconsistent and not included in correlation
analysis. Notwithstanding, all the available data will be correlated to Towsend Scores
5. The Oxford Knee Score is a twelve questions with five possible responses scored from
1 to 5. The worse knee function score is 60 and the best is 60.
6. The Imperial Knee Score (IKS) is a combination of the Total Knee Score and the UCLA
activity scale. The result os a score expectation from 1-10 and then muliply by the
UCLA scoring system for activity,

From the histogram and table above describe the measuring variables :
1. Based on level of measurements where consist of nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. In
this research data only measured by nominal and ratio scale. Nominal scale does not
resemble meaningful order but just codes to represent categories or characteristics.
(Plichta, Kelvin, & Munro, 2013 p.22). Authors use nominal scale to measure gender
(male&female) and ratio to measure age, Oxford Knee Score, Imperial Knee Score (IKS),
EuroQol (EQ-5D) in pre op, post op and change and Total Knee Score because it is
presented by mean. In addition, type of data from gender is categorical yet other is metric
continuous data because presented in mean. However in original data each of them is
different type of data, EQ-5D, Oxford Knee Score, Imperial Knee Score and Total Knee
Score are interval data because each questions have different meaningful order and values.

Conclusion
Based on my opinion all data already clear and categorized however should be mentioned p-
value to indicate whether the data is statistical significance or not
