classrooms. One of it is to improve the students’ performance within the are of learning. This
is because through the language assessment, students become more involved in the
learning process and from this they gain confidence in what they are expected to learn to
what standard. Besides, it also can measure the proficiency of the students. For example, if
the teacher uses approaches such as communicative testing approach like role play or
drama staging, it can actually measure the proficiency of the students as they will fully
participate in using the language. Students can also learn new vocabulary as they come
across through the activity. Furthermore, for the integrative approach, it can help students as
it can assess the students’ grammar skills in few activities that can be conducted in the
class.

2. The most suitable alternative form of assessment to assess speaking skill is through the
oral portfolio. It is basically a student’s oral work. For example, if the teacher does an oral
activity in the class such as debating or forum discussion it will be recorded in the oral
portfolio. The students can record their own voice and upload it in a CD or cloud in the
internet. After that, the students listen back to the recorded voice through the portfolio in the
class. Year 5 students with average language proficiency level can listen back and learn
from their mistakes. The purpose of the portfolio is to help them improve their proficiency
level through the mistakes that have been done. The students can evaluate their friends
written speech before having the speaking session.
