Newton’s Law of Cooling

Objective:

1. To apply solutions of first order

differential equations in Newton’s
Law of Cooling applications.
Newton’s Law of Cooling
Definition:

The rate of change on the temperature

of a body with respect to time is directly
proportional to the difference between the
temperature of a body and temperature of
its environment.

𝒅𝑻
= (𝑻 − 𝑻𝒎 )𝒌
𝒅𝒕

Where:
T=internal temperature of the body
Tm= temperature of the
environment
k= constant
General Form for Newton’s Law of
Cooling
To simplify the differential equation,
𝒅𝑇
= (𝑇 − 𝑇, )𝑘
𝒅𝑡
/0
Multiplying the equation by
1
𝑑𝑇 𝑑𝑡
(
2 = 𝑇 − 𝑇, 𝑘4 )
𝑑𝑡 (𝑇 − 𝑇, )
it will lead to
𝑑𝑇
= 𝑘𝑑𝑡
(𝑇 − 𝑇, )
Then we integrate both sides of the
equation. Since k and Tm are considered
constants, they are left alone.
𝑑𝑇
5 = 𝑘 5 𝑑𝑡
(𝑇 − 𝑇, )
Which equals to
𝑙𝑛(𝑇 − 𝑇, ) = 𝑘𝑡 + 𝐶
Which can be further simplified by
applying e to both sides
𝑒 ;<(=>=?) = 𝑒 @0AB
This would lead to the general form
(𝑇 − 𝑇, ) = 𝐶𝑒 @0
