UTILIZING INFORMATION, GUIDE, AND TIPS ON WORK PUBLICATION PROCESS

— A REFLEXIVE JOURNAL

On September 25, 2020, I attended the webinar entitled “To Publish or To

Perish? Writing and Publishing a Research Paper” that is organized by the Far Eastern
University - Institute of Nursing in cooperation with the University Research Center.
Three notable speakers namely Dr. Tom Olijhoek, Dr. Nidhi Agaral and Dr. Jocelyn
Hipona talked about numerous learnings and shared wisdom to understand deeply the
research publishing writing and publication process. It is a timely and relevant talk for
we, the level 3 students, are currently working on our own research outputs. Herewith,
the webinar has helped to bring out the best in me in producing a research output that is
notable and noteworthy for the advancement of nursing research.
What I learned about the publication and the publication process webinar was the
systematic and guided process of writing, generating, structuring of a research work or
output— that will eventually produce a publishable comprehensive product that has an
addition to a certain field like nursing. The webinar has various learnings shared by
three honorable speakers who have shared their experiences on publishing a work as
well as the proper ways and guidelines on the working and publishing process. To
achieve the objective of publishing a work, a work must be thought of, checked,
submitted very well. In order to achieve this, a work must contain original results or
method or a significance enhancement of a published work, and up-to-date review of a
field or subject that advanced a specific field. The process of generating a research may
be complex but through the points given through the seminar, I will be able to apply it to
our research output process. Through the webinar, I was able to grasp the article type
that I should be using so as to achieve a comprehensive and substantial work as well as
the right way to choose a journal, its structures, and effective manuscript titles.
Guidelines though utilizing the rule of 10 in producing an abstract was also tackled. The
speaker mentioned that an abstract must have 1-2 sentences for the research’s aim, 2-
3 sentences for its materials and methods, 2-3 sentences for the results, and 2
sentences for its discussion/conclusion. Further, the proper ways of creating the
introductory part of the research are mentioned as well as the methods, results, result
visualizations, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgements, and references was also
lectured. Covering letters and conflict of interest was also discussed.
The significance of a published work or an output is to be accessed by aspiring
researchers or the people who need access to free and open scholarly studies and
journals. Publishing an original work that has yielded positive results generated for a
specific field has a great impact for the research to be published soon. As mentioned by
one of the speakers, open access is a great tool for reading, reference, and a source of
new information. Published materials are widely available on the internet and most of
them are accessible freely and others have payment. Nonetheless, essential works and
famous researchers are backuped with recent published and permanent research in the
past. Without published work, there would be no other generated work because
previous works are the basis and underlying support of a new research. Thus, it is a
helpful for future guiding on the process of research productivity.
