Program: Electrical Engineering

As early as a senior middle school student, I held in great adoration of Chengning Yang and
Tsung-dao Lee, two most prominent Chinese-born physicists to have won Nobel Prizes.
Thenceforward, I have cherished the constant aspiration of becoming a renowned physicist
myself the way these two Nobel laureates did. Even one decade later, I can still recall the first
experiment I did in the physics course. When a transmitter in one corner of the lab was
connected with electricity, a little bulb connected to a reception antenna in another corner lit up.
Though by no means dazzling in itself, this light with its stunning magic ushered me as if into a
wonderland, a world replete with intriguing mysteries that only belong to the realm of physics. I
believed that I belonged to this special world. That marked the turning point in my life and with
it I commenced my quests for answers capable of unraveling those mysteries.

With an unusually solid foundation in physics laid during senior middle school (I received straight
A’s in virtually every physics exam), I entered the Physics Department of Dalian Marine
University. By the time I graduated in four years, which could only be described as transitory, I
found that I had become emotionally attached to this discipline. Realizing that undergraduate
studies had only exposed me to the relatively fundamental knowledge of this subject, I
embarked on a Master’s program, through very competitive entrance examinations, in fiber-
optical communication at the College of Telecommunication Engineering, the University of Beijing
Posts and Telecommunications (UBPT).

The moment I came into contact with this brand-new field represented by
telecommunications(China tends to lag behind western countries in scientific and technological
develop in any given field by many years or even decades), I was filled with excitement over the
wonderful prospect that this industry could enjoy. I yearned to be satiated with new concepts,
new knowledge, and new expertise and I devoted myself to my program with indefatigable
efforts. To my regret, after completing our share of research responsibilities in the 863 Project
under the direction of my supervisor, we had no further opportunities to participate in any
meaningful projects. I had no alternative but to duplicate the Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror and
its Applications in OTDM System which had already been completed by scientists abroad and to
verify their research findings by means of computer simulations. It was precisely those backward
research conditions and the lack of challenging projects that prompted me to generate the idea
of seeking further studies abroad. I believed that the status quo would impose serious
restrictions on the development of my intellectual capacities and on the exploitation of my
academic potential.

But for two years before I could bring my overseas studies into a reality, I worked at the leading
enterprise in the country’s telecommunications industry—China Telecom Beijing Branch
Company. As broadband networks engineer and as technical support engineer, I was responsible
for the design and operation of four major projects—Construction of Broadband Integrate
Services Experimental Network, Experiment and Construction of Broadband DSL Network in
Beijing, Test of Timing Clock of Beijing SDH Networks and Equipment Selection for Beijing CDMA
Wireless Network. My distinguished work performance resulted in my being sent to Marconi
Company’s American headquarters to receive professional trainings in ATM technology.
Nevertheless, I still felt that in a company environment work was routinized and technology
lacked innovativeness, falling far short of my passions and ambitions. The work was meaningful
only to the extent of serving as a means of livelihood. Refusing to be mired in a mediocre
condition, I decided that the time had come for me to pursue research work that I had always
loved.

Relying on my solid foundation in physics, my well-trained experimental skills and hands-on

abilities that I developed over the heretofore studies and work, I succeeded in entering the
University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). In the superior laboratory conditions, for the first time in
my life I had a proud feeling of being involved in real scientific research. When I see how my
inspirations turn into reality in the laboratory, once again for the first time in my life I feel that I
am creating a kind of wealth far more precious and valuable than money –knowledge. I realized
that I had made an absolutely correct decision to come to the United States. At the Center of
Nanostructure Materials and Quantum Device Fabrication and Electro Optical Research Center, I
have done two years coursework and one year and half lab research. They have significantly
enhanced my ability to solve research problems independently. Since last year, I have conducted
extensive experiments in the field of nanotechnology and Semiconductor and optoelectronic
elements. Although the approaches and solutions I generate during those experiments frequently
differ from those of my supervisor’s in many important aspects, I have merited positive
comments from him. I am fully confident that by the end of this year my research efforts would
come into full fruition.

Nevertheless, I still feel discontented. In retrospect, I developed a commitment to scientific

research very early and have persevered under the spirit of this commitment. After my arrival in
the United States, I realized that there is tremendous research potential in me to be tapped. All I
need to do is to find an appropriate academic environment. Even UTA disappoints me in that I
have been kept waiting for nearly four year before I could embark on a major research project
that promises important research findings. I have come to the conclusion that whether in China
or in the United States it is simply a waste of time passively waiting for research projects.
Consequently, the best course of action for me to take is to pursue seek a Ph.D. program at one
of the top American universities.

The University of # # # comes on top of my priorities because it is a top ranking university in

the United States itself and in the entire world. In the field of Electrical Engineering, in particular,
it enjoys an unparalleled position. It offers many research-intense programs and the research
environment is impeccable. I am deeply aware that for a person who seeks excellence and who
wishes to achieve some innovative research results in Electrical Engineering, it is imperative that
he or she plunge into an environment which is as challenging and competitive as it is
stimulating, promising the realization of one’s ambitions. If admitted, I plan to take advantage of
the research resources to their fullest extent and within 4 to 5 years achieve major
breakthroughs in research based on what I have so far accomplished. I expect that this may lay
a solid foundation for me to undertake lifelong research at some reputed research institutes of
American universities or world-class companies like Intel and IBM.

The conventional technology based in communication, control, date processing, signal

processing, medical instrumentation and in mainstream computers is in a transition from
electronics to optoelectronics and optically enabled technologies. Future generations of
integrated circuits, the foundation of current high technology infrastructure, are expected to
incorporate significant optical functionality. I hope that my prospective studies at your
prestigious universities can solidify my knowledge and bring into full play my latent intellectual
capacities. I have experienced too many disappointments and frustrations and what I look for is
some truly creative and innovative research work that can lead to important breakthroughs,
which can permit me to join the rank of elitist scientists exemplified by Prof. Cheng ning Yang
and Prof. Tsung-dao Lee whom I idolize.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I am of the opinion that a career involving research will offer the opportunity of working at the cutting
edge of technology, with unparalleled intellectual challenges and creative satisfaction. I would like to see
myself embarking on a mission that would lead to the design and development of extremely mesmerizing
and highly reliable electronic devices of the contemporary world. My goal is to be a Professor/Scientist in
the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Life has taught me to stand up and face every difficulty with all the courage I possess. And it is this
courage that has shown me the path to success and my mistakes whenever I have failed. I have chosen
electronics and communication engineering as my field of study not just to assimilate and reproduce
knowledge but to help me realize my eternal dream of making all our lives comfortable and self assuring.
In my opinion, a good school plays a very important role in nurturing a student to their true potential. I
have studied in the best High School in my city and my under graduate studies have been no different.
My choice, the *****, to pursue my under graduation in Electronics and Communication Engineering was
obvious to me. NITK is consistently ranked among the top ten best engineering colleges in India with
students admitted to the college through the highly competitive All India Engineering Entrance Exam
(AIEEE) which has about 150,000 applicants across the country every year. Among the qualified
students, only the top 1% manages to make it to the NITK in which the ECE Department is the most
reputed. Hence, at the Institute we interact and live with the best minds in the country.

In my view, no subject can be understood deeply without a systematic theoretical & practical
curriculum, distinguished faculty and extreme dedication towards learning. The core courses of Analog
Electronics, Microprocessors, Digital Systems Design, Digital Signal Processing, VLSI, Analog & Digital
Communication and Antennas have given me a good understanding of the theoretical knowledge. Where
as the corresponding laboratories allowed me to implement my knowledge practically.

At NITK, practical and industrial exposure is highly emphasized upon. I have undergone an
intense 4 week industrial training at the Bharath Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL is the largest Telecom
company in India) during my 4th semester. The training helped me understand the advanced routing
techniques and instruments/hardware used in transmitting and routing the wired and wireless based
telephone calls. During my summer vacation, I underwent 4 weeks of training at Osmania University,
Hyderabad in Embedded Systems. It is here that I had the opportunity to undertake my first research
project on 16-Bit General Purpose Microprocessor based on the Load Store Architecture with the help of
****, Professor of CSE Department, JNTU Hyderabad. IEEE has been a significant source of knowledge
for my projects and keeps me abreast of the latest developments in research in electronics. My
association with The IEEE NITK Chapter as a member has helped me understand the dependence of
diverse engineering fields on electronics better.

Apart from the industrial training, I have had the opportunity of working on several projects, both
individually and in teams, at NITK. During the 3rd semester I designed a Reaction Time Indicator (RTI)
using IC’s and LED’s. The RTI is capable of indicating the time taken by a person to react to an event by
up to 1/1000th of a second. During the same period as a team we developed an 8-Bit General Purpose
Accumulator based Microprocessor. I have designed and implemented an 8-Bit Microcontroller using the
Xilinx software tool and SPARTAN-2E FPGA kit during my 5th semester and also coded and
implemented in Assembly Level the game “Hangman” on the ARM7TDMI RISC Microprocessor. The
course on DSP and VLSI during the 6th semester inspired me to take up projects in them as well. In
DSP, I implemented “Zeros of Z-Transform (ZZT) Decomposition of Speech for Source-Tract Separation”
in C and MATLAB. The project was based on a PhD thesis submitted by four Belgian students. In VLSI, I
designed and implemented a 32X16 Content Addressable Memory (CAM) on magic and ngspice
software tools using the 250 nanometer technology. Presently, I am under taking my final year
dissertation under Dr. Shankarananda Bhat, Head of ECE Department at NITK on <Yet to be assigned>.
The myriad projects and trainings have helped me adapt myself to group tasks and individual
tasks with ease. And most importantly, they have helped me determine my domain of interest. I find
Computer Architecture and Microprocessors the most interesting and exciting fields due to their
promising benefits. I have decided to pursue my masters in DSP based Microprocessors and Advanced
Computer Architecture.

Apart from Academics, I indulge myself in several recreational and co-curricular activities. I am
an executive member of The NITK Student Union and The Captain of The NITK Volley Ball team. I am a
member of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and donate blood on a regular basis. During my High
School days, I was the junior sports Captain and I played for the National South Zone Under-19 Volley
Ball team. I am also an accomplished artist.

In my opinion, the Universities in The States are among the best in the world. It is their emphasis
on research that appeals me the most. However, selecting a University to pursue masters in them is not
easy as there are several renowned Universities. Hence, I have been cautious and systematic in
selecting the University of my Choice. I have made my selection after a comprehensive understanding of
the courses offered, distinctions of the faculty and the areas of interest of the Electrical Engineering
department of various Universities as displayed in their websites and on the basis of the faculty
recommendations at NITK.

After an exhaustive inquiry, I have come to the conclusion that The Electrical Engineering department at
<University> is where I wish to study. After going through The Electrical Engineering department website
I realized that your department fulfils all my needs and requirements. Not only does the department
specialize in my areas of interest but also has the equipment in the laboratories that I would like to work
on. <Write some stuff specific to the department, labs, etc.>. The faculties of the department have a
strong educational background and have acclaimed critical accolades. On the basis of my previous
interaction with the faculties of various Universities in India, I would rate yours among the finest in the
world. I am aware of the high standards of academic excellence and path-breaking research that
<University> has set. It will be a privilege and a milestone in my academic career to be part of such a
prestigious institution.

If admitted to your university, I will use the opportunity to design and develop DSP Microprocessors to
the best of my ability. I would make use of the equipment provided at the laboratories and research
centers extensively. I am confident that I will be able to live up to your benchmarks and make a
significant contribution to the betterment of society on the whole. I hope that you will take a favorable
decision towards my application and I look forward to joining your department for an exciting academic
life

Dear Dr XXX
I am writing this letter to show my motivation to join the master program of "XXX" at XXX. I do believe
that my educational background and deep concern of this field of study, makes me a good candidate for
this program.

I have received my bachelor's degree in electronics and communications engineering from XXX
University in XXX. I graduated with honors, as I have never failed any subject during my study. Also, I
ranked 13th amongst my group of students (178 student). My study gave me a solid background in
several relevant subjects such as communications theory, electromagnetic waves, antenna and wave
propagation and digital signal processing. These courses gave me comprehensive understanding of
modulation and its types, RF transmission lines, waveguides, antennas and networking layers and
protocols . In addition, I studied the fundamental mathematics subjects such as calculus, linear algebra,
probability and applied statistics, which are, also, the core of electromagnetic and telecommunications
science. I have received high grades in these subjects.

In my graduation thesis, I was working on a critical project that belongs to future, which is establishing a
low cost, robust, wireless Ad Hoc network between the moving vehicles, without the need of enterprise
infrastructure. My sub-team was working on choosing the best RF link to be suitable to handle the high
mobility challenges of the moving cars environment such as the Doppler effect that shift the carrier
frequency and very short connection time. This made me able to experience the challenges that face
modern telecommunication systems. My work also included modifying the Wifi protocol (IEEE 802.11) to
operate like another protocol called DSRC (Dedicated Short Range communications) that was designed
specifically for the automotive use, as we couldn't buy the adapters that run this protocol. I became
proficient in C language programming, as the wireless driver of the adapter we bought was written in C.

After graduation, I realized that I want to continue my education. I found that I want to specialize in the
development of telecommunications systems.

Besides the college academics I was actively involved in the extra-curricular activities. The driving force
behind all of this was my aim to develop myself more and help people to have a good quality of life. I was
an active member in the IEEE student's branch in my university for about one year. I organized a lot of
events and trips with the aim of spreading science passion, and to provide young creative people with
the proper environment to innovate.

In addition, I was a member in AIESEC, which is an international organization, which provides young
people with cross-cultural volunteering internships to develop themselves and impact their societies. I
travelled to India to participate in a volunteering project related to cancer awareness. I conducted a lot of
presentations and fund-raising events to spread cancer awareness among Indians. Also, I participated in
governmental campaigns made for raising the health level of people. This made me opened to different
cultures and gave me good experience in the social work.

I am also an amateur football player, I was playing in my school team for more than 5 years and I
participated in a lot of tournaments and events, and played for my faculty team for some period.
Moreover, I am a photography and cinema enthusiast, I am engaged in a cinema club in my city called
PARADISO, that spread cinema culture among the people here, and bring them good movies from all-
over the world to watch and discuss.

In general, I am an easy-going person who can tolerate others, no matter what kind of thinking they
have. In addition, I am a fast learner who can learn in a relatively short time.

I want to study in Germany as German higher education is one of the best in the world! I can benefit from
Germany's long and famous university tradition especially in the fields of engineering and science.
Also, German university degree is highly respected by employers around the world. And the cost of living
is reasonable, compared to other European countries, and the education is almost free. It will be a good
chance to study in a country that has produced a long list of revolutionary inventions such as the
automobile, the airbag, X-ray technology, Aspirin and the MP3 data compression format.

Moreover, Germany means living in the middle of Europe surrounded by many other countries. I will
have a wide range of destinations near me. I can experience an entirely different culture and language,
within a couple of hours by train or plane. I can go for weekend's trips in relatively reasonable costs.

Furthermore, I will have the opportunity to learn German language, which will open many doors for me,
as German is one of the ten most spoken languages in the world, this means better opportunities.

I want to study in XXXTU, because of its good reputation in the field of technical studies in general and
communications engineering in particular. I found that the master program of communications and signal
processing has a great reputation for its scientific research standards. This means that during my studies
I can benefit from this international exposure to push my studies and research forward.

On the other hand, XXX city has great variety of nature and green areas, this will help me to maintain a
good mood for studying and be creative. I would like to try skiing in the winter as well. I think it provides a
good atmosphere for studying.

I strongly believe that the master program in XXX will provide me with the suitable knowledge and
background that can qualify me to pursue a professional career in the field of designing and developing
more sophisticated telecommunications systems.

My future research topic is the developing of communication technologies for the ITS (intelligent
transport system), and I believe that the program will provide me with what I need to start.

In the end, I am grateful for considering my application and I look forward for your favorable reply.

Sincerely,

samir

would continue my studies beyond the undergraduate level, as I understand the
unparalleled value of learning in a dynamic and research-based environment.

As I considered my options for postgraduate studies, the Master of Engineering in

Telecommunications program at Goodwell University has stood out for a number of
reasons. The interdisciplinary nature of the program is especially attractive to me, as this
will give me a much broader, more practical understanding of all aspects of
telecommunications, including the business and regulatory aspects as well as the
engineering side. In addition, the hands-on focus of the program and the links to industry
will prepare me for long-term success. With the inherently international nature of today’s
telecommunications industry, it is important for me to study in an international
environment away from my home country, and doing so in one of the top engineering
departments in North America will certainly give me a unique advantage in my career
pursuits.

After completing my master’s degree, I expect to apply what I have learned to drive the
communications industry forward and thus benefit people and society as a whole. I will
return to my native country and seek work in the rapidly developing telecommunications
industry, where this is currently a strong demand for talented, experienced
communication engineers, and especially ones with international experience. By working
in this context, I am confident that I can distinguish myself as a leader in my profession
and make many valuable contributions to the modernization of my country. This is a very
exciting time to be working in the communications industry, as technology is evolving
quickly and new applications are being devised constantly. If I can work at the cutting
edge of this industry, I know that I will have a career that is enriching, meaningful, and
rewarding in the long term.

Statement of Purpose for MS in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE).
SOP for MS in Electronics and Communication Engineering
I believe that education is the most important asset and quality of a man and one should
attempt his best to acquire it. I have been consistently scoring 1st class in all exams in the
undergraduate course until now and I am confident that I have the ability to take up the
Postgraduate course and complete with flying colors.

My fascination towards Electronics and its related areas from childhood had intrigued me
to opt for Electronic and communication as my undergraduate course. I did My
Intermediate at Ideal Junior College. Then I joined my Undergraduate in SPHOORTHY
ENGINEERING COLLEGE, Hyderabad. My undergraduate program has exposed me to
a stimulating academia.

During my college studies I always had an enthusiasm in observing the practical

application of the subjects I studied. Studies of subjects like electronic devices and
circuits ,pulse digital circuits ,linear integrated circuit analysis, cellular and mobile
communication, microprocessor and interfacing etc., in my career gave me an ongoing
interest in the field of Electronics and communication.

I had developed various projects and present in the events conducted in our college and in
other colleges . I had represented the college at national level technical events conducted
by other institutions. This real life experience helped me in understanding the importance
of sequencing and optimizing a task in a better way. I also did a Real time project work
on “Wireless gestures controlled robot with video and voice capture” using Embedded
systems as Front end & Embedded C as Back end. I think I have a very good exposure in
the field of Application Development using different tools.

At this point I feel that pursuing Postgraduate studies in Electronics and Communications
engineering & related subjects would be the right thing to do, as it would put my abilities
and interest together. Graduate studies in ECE will give me all-round exposure in
engineering. I would thus be able to contribute towards the growth of the field and
develop the best appropriate career for myself.
Your esteemed institution has a peerless reputation for emphasizing practical knowledge
and innovation for its students and promotes an excellent industry-institute relationship. I
am confident that your institution will help me contribute positively to the ever-changing
industrial scenario. I look up graduate studies in the department of Electronic and
communication engineering & Related Subjects at your esteemed institution as an
opening to develop my skills and give a direction to my career & to fulfill my core ideas

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Electronics has always been an orphic subject for me. Electronics in its applications and
technology was always an unanswered question for me. As I grew older the questions
were answered but at the same time many new questions with more complexity started
haunting me. This search for the answers aroused a passion towards Electronics and
started exploring the developments and applications in electronics but that did not quench
my thirst for knowledge. Then I could understand only a graduate education can offer me
a great deal of intellectual and personal satisfaction and challenge. This is the main
reason to plan my masters in electronics and communication.

Ranking in the top 3% of the candidates who attended the prestigious exam held, made
my way easier to get into Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering at one of the
best ranked university in India, JNTU. The first two years of under graduate education
was based on fundamentals of all engineering subjects. The next two years was a detailed
study of electronics and communication subjects. Though all the subjects were different
in their theories, all the subjects were interlinked in a few aspects. In these four years of
graduate education, I gained in-depth understanding of the various techniques involved in
problem solving, mainly to cater to the services of the industries. But all the years of my
under graduation was totally based on theories and I didn’t encounter any platform for the
application of those theories. I have always believed that a subject is understood better
when one actually sees an abstract theory being realized by a practical system. So I felt
Graduation is the area where I can put my ideas into implementation.

VLSI designing was introduced in my third year of under graduation program. I felt
VLSI designing is an excellent area to work with. Recent developments in VLSI field
proved my thoughts right. This area gives more scope for the practical application and
research work.
I presented few paper presentations at various technical events. Few topics which I gave
my paper presentation were MEMS technology, Smart card application and wireless
communication. With this basic knowledge I am presently doing my Academic project in
“ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM USING CONTATCLESS SMART CARD
TECHNIQUE AND FINGER PRINT DETECTION”. This technology uses the recent
developments used in the security (access) system. This system provides a high level
security using both the technologies combined at a single place. This security system is
highly reliable and the durability of the system is high. This security system uses
concepts of embedded systems and DSP along with a few communication subjects. This
system uses very low memory and the contact less cards gives no place for disturbance
and the cards which are used cannot be destroyed.

There are two reasons why I believe that graduate study in a reputed department, such as
yours, is important for a person aspiring for a research career. Firstly, working for a thesis
under the guidance of an expert whose work can serve as a model is the most effective
method of transforming a student into a largely independent researcher making
significant original contributions. Secondly, the emphasis of graduate study on intensive
and independent study of a specialized area is an ideal way of making a student capable
of reaching the frontiers of knowledge in a subfield quickly and keeping abreast of the
latest developments.
