GAME BOY

Year it was introduced: 1989

Year it became obsolete: 2003
Price range: $18 to $180
Features: The console features a dull green dot-matrix
screen with adjustable contrast dial, five control
buttons (a directional pad, two game buttons, and
"START" and "SELECT"), a single speaker with
adjustable volume dial, and, like its rivals, uses
cartridges as physical media for games.

Advantages:
 Game Boy is the most successful gaming platform in history
- sold more than 70 million units during its almost 10-year life
 Nintendo was the leader in the worldwide US$15 billion retail video game
industry.
 Nintendo manufactured and marketed hardware and software for its game
systems.
 Nintendo 64 is named Time Magazine’s “Machine of the Year” for 1996.
 Control of the games that ran on its game machines, keeping its third-party
software providers under tight control.
 Improvements:
* In1994, an add on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was
launched, enabling gamers to play Game Boy games on that system.
* In1996, Game Boy was relaunched in a slimmer housing with further
improvements in screen clarity.
* In1997, Game Boy Pocket was introduced in six new colors.
* The new Game Boy color would display sharp and vivid color graphics.
Game Boy Color’s screen was also not backlit, which meant two AA
batteries would last about 12hours. *Nintendo Canada would have access to
abroad selection of ads from the US that could appeal to all the target
segments being considered for their launch plan.
Limitations:
• Both Game Boy hardware and software sales had declined steadily from 1992 to
1996 on a worldwide basis.
• By 1998, support of third-party developers for Game Boy was waning. Many
view edit as a “spentforce” in the market and were reluctant to invest the US
$200,000 to US $300,000 to develop a new Game Boy cartridge, when there were
more attractive opportunities in the much larger console market.
•The marketing communications budget for Nintendo in Canada was only a small
fraction of the Nintendo budget in the US. Also, Nintendo Canada selected its ads
from the pool developed by Nintendo in the US.
•When the original Game Boy was launched in 1989, it had been priced slightly
higher in Canada than the US, attributing to GameBoy’s proportionately greater
sales in the US.
Reasons for its popularity:
 Portable. The Game Boy brought compact video gaming to the mass market
before the expression "versatile" was even a thing. We underestimate it
nowadays, with boundlessly better gaming accessible than us on our cell
phones. In 1989, this was a distinct advantage.
 Affordable. Rather than other hand-helds, for example, the previously
mentioned Lynx and TurboExpress, the GameBoy was strikingly very much
valued at around $90 dollars. We may scoff at that, yet in the last part of the
80s, it was more than worth the cash.
 Built to last. The GameBoy felt solid, and this was significant during a time
which since quite a while ago originated before YouTube gadget drop tests.
The cumbersome packaging gave it assurance, while its ergonomic plan
made it moderately simple to grasp. By the present principles, it's not the
most striking plan in the book, yet it included everything a gamer required,
including an earphone jack.
 There's nothing (we don't rehash anything) unique about the GameBoy's
visuals, and they were similarly as disappointing in 1989 as they are today.
The test for Nintendo was to perceive what they were managing, and
transform a negative into a positive. On the off chance that Nintendo
demanded a 160x144 LCD show, the game encounters needed to
compensate for it.
 It had tetris. It ended up being one of the organization's most astute business
moves! In a hurry Tetris before long turned into a social image, putting the
GameBoy solidly into the standard open cognizance. Without a doubt, the
stage would wear various essential titles, however it was Tetris that
terminated the GameBoy out of the beginning door with a notorious gun.
 For many gamers, the Game Boy was their first stage. It had the weight and
presence of a block and the cartridges were colossal, yet seeing the Nintendo
logo gradually dropping down to the center of the screen as the game took
everlastingly to stack is a distinctive and esteemed memory.
Reason for its obsolescence: It’s outdated, new release (Game Boy Pocket) it is
smaller and lighter. Sharper screen with more black and white coloring.
