Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 City girl Cheryl, 31, never dreamt that she would one day give up her corporate
career to become a volunteer teacher. But that was exactly what happened. Cheryl
was sent to a rural school in Kedah and contributed to her school by establishing a
choral speaking team. The team went on to become a top qualifier at a district-level
choral speaking competition. It was a triumphant moment for the school because it 5
had never won a prize, let alone make it to a top tier in a competition.

2 “I was a public relations (PR) consultant for four years. During that time, I used
to teach students in Puchong. Then I reached a point where I realised I liked
teaching more than PR so I decided to leave.” In 2013, she joined Teach for
Malaysia and was trained for eight weeks. During her training, she was taught 10
different teaching strategies like how to engage the students and how to plan and
have class games. Upon completion, Cheryl was then sent to SMK Pinang Tunggal,
Kedah.
3
Despite the smaller paycheck after switching careers, Cheryl persevered and
went on to assemble a team of students whom she initially saw as lacklustre and 15
polished their talent through sheer grit. She said the experience was an emotionally
charged and physically draining one as she had to start from scratch to find
prospective students. They had problems with speaking English. There were times
my students would get tired but some of them would persevere. It was difficult.
There were issues with pronunciation too as they were used to conversing in the 20
Kedah dialect. “The students don’t pronounce the suffix ‘-s’ but English has a lot of
that, so that was my biggest challenge with them, but I trained them continuously
even through the fasting month and it was so tiring. I even encouraged them with
motivational words to stay focused and soldier on, so they would not lose their
4 spirit.”
25
Privately though, Cheryl did consider giving up after having a difficult time
assembling her 35-student team for the competition. Many opted out owing to lack
of confidence and attendance was just too poor to begin practice. Refusing to give
up, she put her foot down and gave an ultimatum to her students. “There was
another teacher who did it with me. We reached a point where we thought we didn’t 30
want to do it because attendance was discouraging, and the students were dropping
out. So, I called them and reminded them the reasons they joined the competition. It
was then they felt inspired to finish what they started. I had no choice but to tough it
out because I felt that they can ace this competition. But they need to realise it
5 themselves too. I couldn’t get that message across easily. I too got emotional at
times,” she added. 35

The team was made up of students from Form One up to Form 5, some of whom
hail from rural villages and had no transportation to and from the choral speaking
practice sessions. But Cheryl volunteered to chauffeur some of the students to
motivate them to turn up. There was also the regular food and drinks which she
6 would supply on days where the practice took a long time. This also took a hit on 40
Cheryl’s monthly wage of RM2,000. Nevertheless, it gave her much satisfaction.

“One of the ways I motivated my team was I told them that no one is going to
look at them at the competition as we were going up against 25 schools. I told them
they had to make heads turn and that’s how they are going to win which they did. Of 45
course, there were vast differences between our school and the other schools. We
were competing for a spot against schools categorised as cluster institutions,
religious schools, and Chinese schools. On that day, my students delivered an
7 outstanding performance. I saw the reaction on the judges’ faces and they were all
like: Wow! This is such a good school! I never thought we would get the placing but
we did.”

SMK Pinang Tunggal won the fifth spot in that competition.

Question 9 to 15 are based on the following passage. Choose the best answer to
fill in each blank.
Infectious diseases are 9 by microscopic germs (such as bacteria or viruses)
that get into the body and cause problems. Some — but not all — infectious
diseases spread 10 from one person to another. Infectious diseases that spread
from person to person are said to be contagious. Some infections spread to people
from an animal or insect, but are not 11 from another human. Lyme disease is
an example: You cannot catch it from someone you are hanging out with or pass in
the street. It comes from the bite of an infected tick.
Contagious diseases (such as the flu, colds, or strep throat) spread from person
to person in several ways. One way is 12 direct physical contact, like touching or
kissing a person who has the infection. Another way is when an infectious microbe
travels through the air 13 someone nearby sneezes or coughs.
Sometimes people get contagious diseases by touching or using something an
infected person has touched or used — like sharing a straw with someone or

Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 I was born with dyslexia, a learning difficulty which affects the way people read, write and
spell words. My classmates and friends were in the dark about my condition. I was never
able to differentiate between the letters b and d so I would shudder at the sight of them.
Instead of looking for a 2B pencil, I would be searching for a 2D pencil. Friends would
look at me and ask, “Are you witless, Jennifer? 2D pencils don’t exist!” Quietly, I would 5
apologise.

I often got confused over which was my left or right shoe, even up to the age of 12. Being
2
a left-hander made things tougher. School was pure torture as I could not hand in simple
homework without mistakes. My form teacher, Mr. Andrew knew about my condition.
Thanks to his personal attention and encouragement, my self-esteem grew tremendously.
10
My other classmates continuously whined about scoring under 80 marks in their exams. I
3
felt out of place. I failed all my subjects. During report card days, Mum gathered all her
courage to collect my report card. I was often among the last in class. Instead of scolding
me for embarrassing her, Mum would tap my shoulder and say, “So proud of you,
15
Jennifer!” Whenever other parents asked how I had fared in the exams, she would smile
politely and say, “Well, Jennifer did her best.” Facing ridicule from everyone around me
had made me work harder.

4 Being dyslexic, I raced against time to complete my school work every night. In school,
recess time meant rushing to the teachers’ desks for extra guidance. One-on-one
20
attention greatly helps a dyslexic. I can’t recall having the luxury of sitting in the canteen
to enjoy a hot bowl of noodles. Instead of shuttling between art classes like regular kids, I
had to visit medical specialists for consultations. When the school bell rang for dismissal,
I often stayed back to get additional coaching from dedicated teachers. Being the last to
leave, we would lock up the office.

There were lots of sacrifices to be made. I had to make do with five to six hours of sleep. 25
There was no time to chill out with friends. Life was like one big experiment for me then. I
5
tried different studying techniques to find which worked best for me. All my efforts were
not in vain. I scored 7As in the PMR exams. I also dipped a toe on extracurricular
activities by emerging champions in public speaking and table tennis. I even took the top
prize in the Federal Territory Teacher’s Day writing competition. I started contributing 30
articles to local magazines and the joy of seeing my name in print is indescribable.
Anyone can overcome dyslexia if they believe themselves, just like I do.

I dream of becoming a lawyer one day, and I will be starting college next month. In the
6 meantime, I am teaching underprivileged students in my school. It is a project which I
initiated, and it is my way of thanking all those who have helped me. I have been on the 35
receiving end of much kindness. I want to help others who are struggling in school, like I
once did.

The smiles on the faces of the lives I’ve touched, is reward enough for me. After what I’ve
7 gone through as a child, I dedicate this piece to all those who have to go the extra mile to
realise their dreams.

'Dead city': Singapore enters month-long lockdown

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s usually bustling business district was almost deserted
on Tuesday as most workplaces in the city-state closed to stem the spread of the
Covid-19 coronavirus after a surge in cases.
The financial hub has won praise for using a tough regime of testing and tracing

they can dress up for one night and get all the candy in the world to rot
their teeth out and assist with the continuation of childhood obesity and
diabetes. I know, that’s the frugal part of me as well as the holistic health
advisor. So I have to rein that in and remember the amount of fun that I

fill in each blank.

Sometimes people get contagious diseases by touching or using something an

infected person has touched or used — like sharing a straw with someone or
stepping into the shower after someone 14 has athlete's foot. You can help
protect yourself against contagious diseases by washing your hands well and often,
staying away from 15 who are sick and making sure you are up to date on all
vaccinations.

[Time suggested : 60 minutes]

Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 It was lunch time. I had a few hours before going to the gym, so I fixed a smoothie
and salad for myself. What I really wanted was a burger with fries, but I needed to lose
weight. So, I went on a no-carb diet and stuck to smoothies and raw food as much as I
could. It was not something I enjoyed at all but to look good, I guess I was willing to do
2 whatever it took. 5
With salad and smoothie in hand, I settled myself in front of the TV. Switching
channels, I stopped on a designer fashion show and was mesmerized by the models. I
wanted to be like them! They look incredible in those beautifully tailored clothes. They
have a flat stomach and a long slim neck. Their shoulders are bony. Those were the
3 thoughts that raced through my mind. Their outfits hung so gracefully on them. 10
I squinted as that last thought crossed my mind and I looked closely at the models. I
started to realise that they had the same scrawny arms and legs, the same
expressionless faces made up with heavy make-up and the same stringy hair that was
plumped and styled with gels and hair spray to look shiny and thick. The thing that struck
me the most about the models was that they did not look happy. Their smiles did not 15
4 reach their eyes as they seemed fake and unreal. I started questioning myself: “Do I
really want to be like them?”
With that thought still in my head, I grabbed a popular fashion magazine. As I flicked
through it, I saw page after page of pictures of models with the most beautiful, smooth
skin. Their skin had no pores and not a single hair on it. Then, I remembered my sister’s 20
wedding photographer who said that he would touch up some of the close-ups of her
because her skin was bad. When her pictures came back, it looked like she had perfect
skin. Of course! That must be exactly what had been done to all these photos in the
5 magazine as well. I quickly took out my tablet and searched for famous models without
make-up and they looked like everyone else – they had flaws and were not perfect at all. 25
I searched for more information on how to become a model and I was shocked to
learn that they hardly ate anything. Some of them smoked heavily just so they can lose
their appetite. They have to lose a lot of weight or else they wouldn’t get many jobs.
Advertisements make the models appear loved, popular and happy. This is just an act
6 which looks realistic and which many people get fooled by. Behind the cameras, it is a
completely different story. 30
Over the next few weeks, with my mother and sister’s help, I knew I did not want to
be unhealthy. I realise I am one of a kind and that is what I want to be. It is important to
7 be happy and be with people who love me for who I am – a unique person. By accepting
my looks and being thankful for being healthy, I have become confident, content and
happy. 35
Now I look in the mirror and smile. Nowadays, I go out to eat burgers and fries and
have a lovely meal with my friends. Of course, I am careful to eat sensibly but at least I’m
not obsessed by it anymore. I love myself and will never do anything to change that.
