Looking back at the start of my career, I
remember sitting in the staff room wondering
if I could do this. Reality had finally hit me.
Becoming a teacher was definitely not a bed
of roses. It was all a far cry from my fondest
childhood memory of instructing my cousins
to write down words which I had written on a
portable whiteboard. Yet I had dreamed of
being a teacher since I was six years old.
I guess that teaching was in my blood. My
grandfather had been a school principal
before he retired. My parents were both good
English Language teachers, who had met at a
teaching course in Singapore., married and
then had me. They had raised me to be both
patient and inquisitive, so I thought I had
everything it took to be the best teacher in the
world especially since I had graduated top of
my class that year. I didn’t know yet what
was in store for me.
On my first day as a teacher, only two
students were in class. The other thirteen were
nowhere to be found. Later I discovered that
they were actually working in the fields or
tapping rubber with their parents. I felt
depressed. How was I to teach them English if
they didn’t even show up in school? It felt as
if my hopes of breaking school and even the
district record had come crashing down. I had
dreamt of making such a difference to the
lives of my students! I had wanted to help
them achieve their best potential. And here
the students did not even bother coming to
school.
I remember sitting in the staff room, lost in
thought. Should I throw in the towel and quit
teaching in this government school in this
rural area where the children did not think it
was important to attend school? I wondered if
I should apply for a job in a city school where
I could put everything I had learnt into

‘Cikgu. Cikgu Loh.’
One of my two students stood there, eyes
shining with excitement, holding a worn out
novel in her hand. A fairy tale of some sort. I
asked her how I could help her. She said she
had been trying to read the book but while she
could make out the sounds of the words in
English, she did not know what they meant.
She wondered if I could teach her.
I felt ashamed. Only a minute ago I had
thought of giving up and running back to the
city. Meanwhile, this young student was
reaching out to ask for a little help from me.
There and then I vowed to make a difference
to her life and all the children who had not
come to school. I would find some way to get
them to come to school because they needed
to learn now, instead of working in the fields
beyond the school gate.
O tried many tricks form that day on to get
the students interested in learning. Soon, more
and more of the thirteen absent students
started showing up in school. First, I offered
stationery. A shiny new en or a small eraser
was already exciting for them. Then I noticed
that they stayed in class during recess, and I
realized they had nothing to eat and no money
to buy food. So I started a collection from
friends and family to provide healthy snacks
for them. What really made them light up
with excitement was when I used laptops and
other electronic gadgets as my teaching tools.
Their excitement every time I let them listen
to a song or watch a video in English or do an
online quiz using electronic gadgets during
lessons or after school touched my heart.
Their language proficiency started improving
slowly. I felt they were on the right track at
last. Twenty years on, I am still in a rural
school. I think my grandpa would be proud as
I now have an office just like his.

What to Avoid Posting on Facebook

Facebook has become a globally-influential social networking phenomenon. Users love being
able to connect instantly to whoever they want. 27 However, the openness of this
platform means there should be some things you avoid sharing on your Facebook page.
Firstly, you should not post a criticism of a friend or family member on Facebook. It would
only publicly display your inability to handle conflict between family and friends. 28
Light teasing without mentioning names is acceptable. Mean or offensive comments posted on
Facebook would most likely get back to that person and make things worse.
Next, you should avoid breaking off a friendship or relationship online. After all, you
wouldn’t like it if it was done to you. 29 Show the other person some respect and deal
with the breakup in private.
Sharing embarrassing or distasteful photographs or videos is not acceptable. 30
Besides, a gory picture of your or someone else’s medical condition is not everybody’s cup of
tea. Remember, things posted online are in cyberspace forever.
It is also unwise to post about other’s travel plans in your Facebook page. You may be letting
a criminal know when to rob that person’s house. 31 Just wait to comment until after that
person returns home.
Do remember that you do not have to accept all friend requests. Filter them. Accept only
requests from friends you know well or who is at least an acquaintance. 32 Online safety
is as important as physical safety.
To conclude, although Facebook has multiple uses, conveniences and benefits, it is an online
sharing platform open to many. It is better to avoid saying and posting things online that you
wouldn’t do face-to-face, and always keep privacy and safety in mind.

Teens on Special Education
A – AZLAN, 16 years old
Some children are not able to learn at the same pace or in the same ways as other children,
maybe because they might have learning disabilities. They may need individual attention in
order to help them achieve their true potential.
B – ANNIE, 14 years old
My mother was worried every time my little brother wrote the letters ‘e’ or ‘b’ backwards.
Then she told me tht he has a learning disability called dyslexia, which means he has problems
with reading and writing. I was sad when the other children in his kindergarten laughed at him
and made fun of him. It was a relief when Mum sent him to a special school in Primary One.
C – KIM FAH, 15 years old
I hated going to primary school because I was bullied a lot. Some of my classmates called me
‘stupid’ because I am slow learner. However, in Form 1 my class teacher advised my parents
to put me in a special education classes. I am in a smaller class now and I am enjoying my
lessons.
D – JANE, 13 years old
Last year, our class assignment was making and selling bookmarks for Autism Awareness
Day. At first, we did not know what autism was, but after we researched it, we realized that
not all children are born with good health. Some children have very serious problems with
their movement, speech and social skills. We were very happy to have raised some money and
awareness for this cause.
E – SHARIF, 15 years old
I have always been around children with special needs. My mother is a special education
teacher in the morning. In the afternoon, she looks after special needs children at home. I have
learnt to be very patient when interacting with them because they cannot communicate easily
like other children. I enjoy spending time with them. Many like arranging things like blocks
and toys, or doing arts and crafts.
F – LI ANN, 17 years old
My cousin Edna and I are the same age. When we were young, I noticed that Edna could not
run, play or tie her own shoelaces easily, unlike me. She also didn’t speak in full sentences,
instead she used just a few words to tell us what she wanted. Someday I hope to study about
special education in university o that I can help other children like my cousin.
