7 Operational Definition of Terms

Key concepts in this study are operationally defined as follows:

1. Socio-demographic profile– refers to the socio-demographic data of

the respondents that include the following:

1.1 Age - refers to the respondents’ age nearest his/her birthday at the

time of the study.

1.2 Sex – refers to whether the respondent is male or female

1.3 Educational attainment – refers to the respondent’s highest

educational attainment during the time of the study. At a categorical

level, respondents’ educational attainment was classified based on

NEDA’s (2004) classification: college, high school, elementary and

no schooling. Nonetheless, it would be expected that the

respondents, being law students, are assumed to have finished at

least a Bachelors degree.

1.4 Type of household – refers to whether the respondent is currently

living in an apartment or boarding house, a home owned by him, his

family, or his relatives, a condominium unit, or other types of

household.

2. Observance – this refers to whether or not they are doing those

prohibited acts listed in section 48 of RA 9003. Not doing those acts means a

stricter observance.
