Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendations

Summary of Research

The fundamental purpose of this study is to identify the level of awareness of selected

senior high school students of Malayan Colleges Laguna under the Humanities and Social Sciences

strand. The researchers were required to be subjected to certain goals as a prior condition to

accomplishing the paper. To start with the research paper, the background of the study was written by

defining what racism is, and how it connects to whitewashing; it was also stated in the background of the

study which film genres were inclined to practicing “yellowface". The background of the study also

comprises of films that were whitewashed by film industries. After the researchers were able to

characterize the underlying wordings, the research was able to progress. Second, the significance of the

study expounded the substance of this research in the academia, society, and entertainment industries. In

order to start with collecting data, the researchers used quantitative method for this study. In order to have

the data gathered and analyzed, instruments such as a film that was whitewashed and questionnaires were

arranged. There are 80 respondents coming from the grade 12 HUMSS students of A46, B46, and B47. A

whitewashed film entitled "The Last Airbender" was played for 30-45 minutes, and the questionnaires

were subsequently given to each of the students present in the classroom. Regarding to the survey form,

the researchers used likert scale to identify their level of familiarity on whitewashed films, their

preference, and their thoughts about the wrong casting of actors. The survey form consisted of 12

statements, and in order to prevent apathetic and biased answers, six of the statements are the counterpart

of the other half. The likert scale is segregated into five numbers, 1 as strongly disagree, 2 as disagree, 3

as neutral, 4 as agree, and 5 as strongly agree.

Conclusion

This research investigated the level of student’s choice in watching films. Primary data

were collected randomly by allocating questionnaires to 80 respondents. This study has given out

the information about whitewashing, identified the level of the viewer’s understanding in these

kind of films and has recognized the respondents are contrived by the whitewashing.

Based on the research conducted the following conclusions can be drawn: First, the

respondents have the same perception of what they observed in wrong casting of the characters

that cannot be suited on the shown film. Lastly, the respondents eventually be more mindful of

why whitewashing films still happens in the film industries. This is the solution for them to be

more knowledgeable in watching whitewashed film like this.

The results of this study indicate that the awareness is the important factor that will

influence students in choosing Hollywood films. However, these findings cannot be generalized

into other strands of the students. The same study needs to be conducted with students from other

strands to see if there are any similarities with the factor that will influence student’s choice in

selecting films to watch.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings and conclusions presented, the following recommendations are suggested:

1. Provide more research and studies about whitewashing in the industry of films.

2. A better and well-organized questionnaire will be needed to derive more accurate answers

and responses from the respondents.

3. Film industries should stop producing racial films by casting proper actors according to the

character's color based on what it is being adapted from.

4. Film viewers must be more open about whitewashing in films by educating oneself about the

background of a certain film and the race of the characters.
