Data Gathering Instrument

The data gathering device employed in this research is in the form of survey questionnaire
developed by the researchers. This questionnaire has been adapted and modified from Filipino – English
Code Switching Attitudes and Practices and Their Relationship to English Academic Performance among
Freshman by Ma. Theresa B. Valerio. It is a 5-point Likert scale that consists of five parts: (a) the
academic profile of the respondents; (b) their attitude towards code-switching; (c) their attitude towards
code-switchers; (d) their reasons for code-switching; and (e) their types of code-switching. The
respondents were asked to rate each statement which best describes their evaluation using the following
scale: (5) strongly agree, (4) agree, (3) undecided, (2) disagree, and (1) strongly disagree.

The data gathering device in this study is in a form of survey questionnaire developed and
formulated by the researchers. The questionnaire is adapted and modified from: Influence of
Home Environment on Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Agricultural
Science in Adamawa State Nigeria by Egunsola, A. O. E. (Ph.D.). This questionnaire goes
through consecutive consultations and is validated by experts. The survey demographics, where
the students will provide their name, grade & section, age, sex, and their Grade Point Average
(GPA), to gather information that will help the present study to be more accurate and valid. It
will be created using suitable questions that will fall under the main objective of the study. The
survey will be comprised of 4 questions designed to obtain information from the respondents
such as their residence, socio-economic status, and parents' educational attainment. Respondents
will answer the questions by ticking the checkbox that best describe their evaluation.

Data Gathering Procedures

Since the survey was fully anonymous it is not possible to determine the sources of origin of the
responses. In order to be able to divide and judge the level of maturity of the students that
respondents base their answers on, the survey contained the question of the grade(-s) and the
subject(-s) that respondents are responsible for. As mentioned before, the survey contains both
open-ended and closed questions. Such a mix of questions allows to create a survey which
questions in the highest extent possible, resemble questions and explore topics similar to those in
the interview guide. This allows an easier comparison of the result of the survey and the answers
of the interviews. The survey has provided also some quantitative data that can be helpful for the
validation and analysis of the results of the interviews. During the survey response collection
period over 50 respondents (in which 25 respondents are from elementary schools (years 1-3)
and 29 teach at middle Chapter 4. Method 32 schools (years 4-6)) have granted answers to the
survey, which seems sufficiently to perform a quantitative analysis of responses. Gathered data
has been analysed with division into two groups - one for data from teachers from elementary
school and one from teachers from middle schools.

The concept in conducting the survey will be authorized by the school's principal after they will
be provided a signed letter. After the questionnaires prepared by the researchers was validated by
experts, these will be distributed to the respondents, grade eleven students under the General
Academic Strand (GAS). This will be supervised by the respective teachers assigned to the target
subject. Students are required to answer the demographics in order to identify the authenticity of
the answers on the survey sheet. It will only be valid if the said demographics are completed and
is ready for statistical treatment. They are expected to answer the four (4) questions included in
the questionnaire in a span of 3-5 minutes. They will not be forced to participate, and will not be
used to falsify any data that will be collected.
