THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-ESTEEM AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

FOREIGN

RELATED LITERATURE

Self-esteem is the subjective appraisals of an individual that leads to competency

and incompetency particularly to students (Sedikides & Gregg, 2003).

According to Rubie et al. (2004), the best way to improve student achievement is
the improvement of self-esteem.

Kuh et al. (2007) said that there should be at least five factor that affects the
academic performance of students and these are their background characteristics,
structure of the institution, interaction between the students and the faculty, student’s
awareness of learning, and achievement behavior of students

RELATED STUDIES

Hall (2007) conducted a study that aimed to know the relationship of self-esteem,
academic achievement, and academic performance of students. The result indicated
that there is a significant relationship among academic performance, academic
achievement, and self-esteem.

Murphy (2009) examines the relationship of parental encouragement,

independent learning, and academic achievement. The findings showed that there is a
positive significant relationship between parental encouragement and academic
performance.

Vidya (2012) conducted a study that tends to evaluate the effect of positive peer
relationship on self-esteem among adolescent students. There were 60 adolescents
sample that were randomly chosen and Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Inventory and Peer
Relation Scale were used to collect data. The samples participated in eight different
planned series of activities. The result showed that the participants gained a high self-
esteem and peer relation after participating in the activities. This means that there is a
positive relationship between positive peer relation and self-esteem of the adolescents.

LOCAL

RELATED LITERATURE

The lack of support for students becomes a stress factor that contributes to
feeling demotivated affecting their performances in class discussion and participation.
(Bagapuro et al., 2019)

According to Fabella and Leander (2020), studies have established that parental
involvement and academic performance are related constructs that affect the academic
achievement of school children. Parents affect their child's academic performance in
securing the foundation for their child’s learning capabilities and educational
achievement.

According to Del Mundo (2021), self-esteem is an individual trait and that high
self-esteem promotes learning. Therefore, emphasizing this trait will give promising
results for children since it helps uplift one’s self and reduces the risks of the students
suffering from anxiety.

RELATED STUDIES

In a study conducted by Tus (2020), the result shows that students need
extensive educational learning experience from the school and their environment to
harness their skills and develop their self-efficacy.

According to Bautista et al., (n.d.) the respondents of the study are 70 College
students of the PUP – Binan Campus. To determine whether there is a relationship
between social condition and social identity, the researchers used the statistical
treatment Pearson r correlation. The results revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.27
and the test significance for Pearson r showed that the t-computed of 2.27 is greater
than the t-value of 0.2987 at a 0.03 probability level and 68 degrees of freedom. Thus,
it shows that there is a significant relationship between self-esteem and academic
performance among the respondents
Yanzon (2018) conducts a descriptive correlational study to assess the level of
self-esteem, self-efficacy, and academic performance. A total of 194 tertiary students in
the College served. The findings revealed that 60% of the respondents have a high
level of self-esteem while 61% reported a high level of self-efficacy. Their general
weighted average during the academic year 2015 -2016 ranges from 86 - 90 as
respondents of the study. They were chosen using stratified random sampling
technique. Their academic performance and self-esteem showed a significant
relationship. Student’s academic performance and self-efficacy also showed a
significant association. These findings led to the conclusions that someone with a high
self-esteem is expected to perform well academically. It is also concluded that how the
students expect they can successfully perform a behavior have a statistically significant
correlation with how they perform academically.
