CHAPTER I

Introduction to the Study

Smartphone addiction has negative impacts on students learning and overall

academic performance. The greater the use of a phone while studying, the greater the

negative impact on learning. The skills and cognitive abilities students needed for

academic success are negatively affected by excessive phone use. The constant pings of

notifications distract a person from whatever they’re doing that can cause the decreasing

their focus. Many people experience negative effects including students dropping places

in terms of their academic school ranking. Students find it fascinating and waste of hours

on it. Not only is it misleading, but it’s also confusing. It also interferes with studies and

sports, as children prefer to spend more time on their mobile phones than books. They

tend to lose focus on their academic performance declines. (Manju Niar, 2023).

Studies have proven that teens who spend too much time with their cell phones

are more prone to stress, anxiety and depression. It also found that excessive use of

smartphones may result in an increased mental health problem. Smartphones also

contain radiation that can be harmful to our health. Smartphones radiation can defect our

brain energy homeostasis. Excessive smartphone can disrupt your sleep, which can have

a serious impact on your overall mental health. It can impact your memory, affect your

ability to think clearly, and reduce your cognitive and learning skills.
Encouraging self-absorption. Jones (2014) conducted a survey of Elon’s student’s

behavior as well as an online survey and students seemed to be addicted to their

cellphones. However, it was concluded that excessive smartphone use has a negative

impact.

According to Billieux J. Mauarge P. Lopez- Fernandez O, Kuss D. Griffiths MD.

It can cause serious concerns among health and educational authorities due to negative

effects of such use in children and adolescents. Recent reviews have argued that the

evidence supporting excessive smartphones use as an addictive behavior is scarce. It has

been argued that there is insufficient evidence for behavioral and neurological similarities

between excessive smartphone use and other types of addictive behaviors.

Excessive smartphone use is associated with difficulties in cognitive-emotions

regulation, addiction to social networking, shyness and low self-esteem. Medical

problems include sleep problems, reduced physical fitness, unhealthy eating habits, pain

and migraines, reduced cognitive control and changes in the brain`s gray matter volume.

(Henry H. Wilmer, Lauren E. Sherman and Jason M. Chein)

According to Victoria State Government and Department of Health, Mobile phone

use is so widespread (it was estimated in 2011 that there were around five billion mobile

phone users), public concerns about the possible health effects or mobile phones receive a

lot of coverage in the media. Because so many people use mobile phones, medical

researchers are concerned that any associated health risks, even small ones, could cause

significations problems. It is important to understand the risks and possible effects of

mobile phone use and make up your own mind about how you use your mobile phone.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the impact of using a smartphone to the attention span

among senior high school students in Arandia College Taguig Inc.

1. Is it necessary for the students to use smartphones during classroom learnings?

2. What are the benefits of using smartphones as a senior high school students like

you?

3. What are the disadvantages that senior high school students may encounter in

terms of:

3.1 Mentally

3.2 Constant use

4. Where will the students be more comfortable listening? through.

4.1 Smartphones

4.2 Discussions

Hypothesis

1. There is a significance between the impact of using a smartphone to the attention span

among senior high school students in Arandia College Taguig Inc.

2. If the use of smartphones during class is distracting and has no connection with what

the teacher is saying in front, then it will automatically be strictly prohibited to use.
3. If the students focus more on smartphones instead of listening, then they will tend to

have less concentration.

4. If senior high school students have an excessive phone use, then it will have negative

impacts on student learning and overall academic performance.

E. DEFINITION OF TERMS

A Smartphone is a cellular telephone with an integrated computer and other features.

Through Smartphones, an enjoyable manner rather than going through whole books

just to find the desired information.

Attention span refers to an individual’s ability to attend to a stimulus or object over a

period of time. The constant use of technology has shortened our attention span 12

minutes to 5 minutes.

Constant phone use or Overuse of your cellphone: to use smartphones too much: to

use smartphones excessively or too frequently.

F. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers believe that this study will not only yield information that will be

useful to students, more so to the following groups of people;

The Students. Through this study, the Senior High School students can be prepared at the

using a smartphone to the attention span in academic and the way it could be a barrier for

them to focus on their academic performance. Hence, the students may aspire to be extra

competitive in the following classes.

The Teachers. This study can be a great advantage to the teachers, and it can provide

specific reasons why the Senior High School students at Arandia College Taguig are

having a hard time on figuring using smartphones during classes to the attention span

among the students may effect on their academic performances or academic matters, and

the way this can have an effect on or enhance their teaching strategies.

Arandia College Taguig Inc. This study can be a great advantage to Arandia College,

wherein the study is conducted. They may also take our program because it can take a

crucial role in implementing Anti- excessive amount of smartphone usage during classes

on Arandia College Taguig.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. The result of the study will include the Impact of

Using a Smartphones to the Attention span in Academic together with the program that

we will proposing as a part of the educational process. Through this study, they may

utilize our proposed program in crafting educational programs to strengthen the action

against the constant use of smartphones during classes that make this situation worst.

FUTURE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. The result of this study may assist the

future High School students through allowing them to grasp mentally what’s the impact

of using a smartphone to the attention span to the Senior High School students at Arandia

College Taguig, they will have a prior knowledge and they will provide significance to
education additionally mentally which will eventually cause foe the better learning

techniques for the future generation.

G. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The impact of using smartphones on attention span of senior high school students is a
complex and multi-faceted issue that has both significant benefits and limitations.

Scope:
Smartphones can be an effective tool for learning, research, communication, and
organization, which can improve the attention span of students. The use of educational
apps on smartphones can engage students and foster their curiosity, thus improving their
attention span. Smartphones allow for quick access to information, which can increase
students’ retention of new learning taking place. The continuous use of smartphones can
develop cognitive skills, fast analysis, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Limitations:
Smartphones are a major source of distraction for students, causing a decrease in their
attention span. The constant notifications, messages, and social media updates may
interfere with students' concentration, affecting their learning and comprehension. The
excessive use of smartphones can lead to addictive behavior, which may affect the mental
health, sleep pattern, and emotional well-being of students. The reliance on smartphones
can reduce students’ face-to-face communication and social skills, which are essential for
their personal growth.

In conclusion, while the use of smartphones can have a positive impact on the attention
span of senior high school students, it is essential to consider the limitations and monitor
student behavior to ensure constructive use of technology.
