CHAPTER 1:

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Today people of the world have new addiction, this new addiction is

known as a "Smartphone’s". Are mobile phones that have a computer-like

function? Smartphone is a mobile phone with a microprocessor, memory, and

built-in modem. Smartphone is a multimedia phone that resulting in a

luxurious gadget, where there are camera, music players, videos, games,

email access, digital television, GPS.

The evolution of the times and technology the concept of Smartphone

continues to grow from year to year, as a advanced device. Peoples tend to

have busy life in these days due to job, school and personal issues, therefore

they prefer to have a mobile device which satisfies their needs to stay in

touch and be reachable at any time.

There is no little doubt that smart phones have definitely made our
lives much more convenient in many ways. However, smart phones have
also changed the way that people interact with each other. Smart phones
allow its users to be in a conversation without showing their personal
expressions. Unlike a face-to-face conversation where one requires direct
eye contact, smart phones enables user to “say things through instant
messaging that you wouldn’t dare say in face-to-face contact or even on the
telephone where you can hear each other’s voice” (Harmon, 2003). That is
the reason why people use smart phones for discussion, which they prefer
not to have in person. As a result, we are beginning to lose the face-to-face
contact that was such an important part of our lives in the past. The contact
with real-time voice call is being replaced by multimedia messages
application of smart phones. Not only change the way that people contact
each other, but smart phones also emit radiation which some believe may be
harmful to human health. The emission of radiation from mobile phone may
cause serious damages to human in long-term since it uses electromagnetic
radiation in the microwave range. That is the reason why mobile phone are
often prohibited in hospitals and on airplanes, as the radiofrequency signals
may interfere with medical devices and navigation systems.

The problem of Smartphone focuses on the influence of the usage

mostly on students. The effect of Smartphone usage has a positive impact,

since the use of Smartphone is very necessary in the learning process

provided the teacher must continue to supervise the students. The use of

Smartphone in schools, for the reason that there are many students who

operate Smartphone at school and the result is students become lazy,

difficult to concentrate and focus on Smartphone, thus this research paper

tackles about the positive effect and negative effect of smart phones to a

person or individual.
Statement of the Problem

The effects of daily Smartphone through the daily usage that involves

students and how it affects their mind, behaviour, time management, health

etc. is the main focus of this study, in order for us to understand and discuss.

This research will be successful if we will achieve its objective to answer the

following questions:

1. Are you a user of Smartphone?

2. How long did you spend time using your Smartphone?

3. Does your family member’s have smart phone too?

4. What are your activities in Smartphone?

5. Which one do you prefer?

Significance of the study

This research is conducted to perform evaluation on how Smartphone affects

every individual or students.

To students, the results of this research will help the students have

deeper understanding of the proper use of Smartphone. It serves as their

guidelines in making right decisions on how to spend time with it and properly

use it
To future researchers, the future researchers can use the result of this

research as their reference and guide. Researcher can also develop their

skills and manipulation about research that have done.

Scope and Limitations

This research is limited focus to students regarding Smartphone. SCOPE the

research entitled <Title>, will be conducted at Minuyan National High school. This

study will only focus to the experiences of random students. Including the students

who do not have internet access. This study will be using interview through survey

questionnaires between researchers and respondents and purposeful sampling

strategy in order to invite the random students to be part of the study for data

gathering to have quality information and add value to the research topic.

Hypothesis

1. There is no student who doesn’t own a phone.

2. There are good and bad effect of using Smartphone to their academic

performance of the students.
