Chapter 3: Research Methodology Overview

The chapter outlines the methodology used in the study. It describes a descriptive research design used to evaluate Grade 12 STEM students on the effectiveness of an integrated electronic medical record system. The respondents were 151 Grade 12 STEM students selected through systematic random sampling. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics like frequency count and percentage in SPSS.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This portion of research elaborated the procedural

approach instead in the conduct of the study. The topics are

the research design, respondents of the study, sampling

technique, research instruments, data gathering procedure

and statistical treatment.

Research Design

This research design used the descriptive method of the

study to depict the data collection from survey. This study

focused on the evaluation of the grade 12 STEM strand

students for the effectiveness of the Integrated Electronic

Medical Record System from the given questionnaires.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were students of Grade 12

who were currently enrolled in Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics strand of Garcia College of

Technology in School-Year 2019-2020.

34

Sampling Technique

The total population of this study is two hundred

thirty-three (233) from the Grade 12, Science and

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics of Garcia College of

Technology, Inc. in School-Year 2019-2020. From the given

population, one hundred fifty-one (151) were selected as

sample size.

In this study the researchers used systematic random

sampling with random start in identifying and selecting the

respondents of the study.

Systematic Sampling is a method of selecting the nth

element of the population. (Cristobal & Cristobal, 2017) In

addition, Dudoskiy (2016) stated that systematic sampling

requires an approximated frame for priority but not a full

list.

The sample size will be derived using the Calmorin’s

formula:

Ss =NV + ¿¿

Where:

Ss =¿ ¿Sample size

N = population size
35

V = standard deviation (2.58)

Se=¿¿Sampling error

P = the largest possible proportion

A total of one hundred fifty-one (151) respondents were

derived from the above formula which is the Calmorin’s

Formula.

First Step. After computing the sample size, the

researchers identified the recipients through systematic

random sampling with a random start. The researchers

borrowed a list of students from the registrar that served

as the source of the selection of respondents. Using the

list, the researchers marked numbers from one to two hundred

thirty-three for Grade 12 STEM. With that, the researchers

computed for the sampling interval (k)

Sampling interval can be calculated by this formula:

N
k=
n

Where:

k = sampling interval

N = total number of students/respondents

n = number of respondents
36

After calculating the sampling interval (k) of two (2),

the next sequence was the selection of the random start. The

researchers selected a number from one to two hundred

thirty-three (1-233) for STEM 12 with the sampling start of

seven (7). And the application of two (2) as the sampling

interval (k) is used to complete the selection and list of

respondents.

Research Instrument

The main instrument used in collecting the data for the

study is the questionnaires or survey questionnaires that

were given to the students or respondents of Garcia College

of Technology, Inc. These questionnaires were divided into

two parts. The first part deals about the personal profile

of each respondent. The second part was about the evaluation

of the Grade 12 STEM Strand students for the effectiveness

of the electronic medical records system adaptation of

Garcia College of Technology, Inc. School Clinic.

Data Gathering Procedure

37

Before the distribution of questionnaires, the

researcher asked for permission from the principal of Garcia

College of Technology, Inc. to allow the researchers to

conduct study in the campus. The researcher requested for

the copy of enrolled students of Grade 12 in Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics strand of School-

Year 2019-2020 from the Office of the Registrar. The

distribution and answering of questionnaires is given at the

most convenient time.

The research instrument undergoes face and content

validity by their research adviser to comply its needed

purpose in data collection and for proper validation before

the distribution of data with the respondents.

The distribution of questionnaires is followed with

proper orientation about the instructions of the

questionnaires and the main objective of the study. Through

it, the answer on each questionnaire was to be evaluated and

calculated by researchers. The collected data were studied

and carefully manage by statistical procedures.

Statistical Data Analysis

38

The information was encoded in Microsoft Excel and was

converted into SPSS file by Statistical Package for Social

Sciences (SPSS) software.

The descriptive statistics such as frequency count and

percentage were used in analyzing data. The respondents

profile was analyzed based on their sex using frequency and

percentage count.

Frequency is simply the number of participants who

indicated the certain category F (Korb, 2013).

Percentage is calculated by taking the frequency

divided by the total number of respondents and multiplying

F
it by 100 % , %= ×100 % (Korb, 2013).
