The Correlation Between the Environment and the

Academic Performance of SMAW Students of Amaya

School of Home Industries

Abstract
Academic performance of a student is affected by too many factors. Environment
refers to all things that surrounds us and especially that may affect us. Current study
has investigated the relationship of environment with SMAW students’ performances in
Amaya School of Home Industries. The focus of the study was to find out the
relationship of the particular students’ academic performances and their interactions
with their friends, neighborhood, acquaintances and their family. SMAW students of
Amaya School of Home Industries were the population of the study.

Introduction
There are several factors that affects students’ academic achievement. It is either
home environment, learning environment or the general environment of a student which
may be friends, acquaintances, neighbors or people in his/her hometown. According to
(Eventus, 2015) environment play a major role in the life of every individual whether a
student, teachers, employer or employee. So to measure the academic performance of
a student, we should identify the factors that may affect his performance and we should
consider his environment.

Education is one of the vital aspects of human resource development (Oyediran,

2018). That’s why it is important to know the major factor that may affect the academic
performance of a student and one of this is the student’s environment as studies have
shown that environmental factors to a very large extent affect both the physical and
psychological potential of an individual (Eventus, 2015).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to determine the influence of environmental factors on
the academic performance of a student of SMAW students of Amaya School of Home
Industries.
Specifically, the study aimed to provide the answers to the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the students in terms of:

a. Gender
b. Age
c. Social Class of Family

2. How student’s family treat him/her?

3. What is the people’s behavior in the respondent’s hometown?

4. What is the perception of respondent regarding the teacher’s behavior

towards him/her?

5. Is there significant relationship between environment and academic

performance of the respondents?

1.3 Scope of the Study

From the problem stated above, the following hypothesis were formulated:

Ho1: There is no significant relationship between teacher’s attitude towards

student and student’s academic performance.

Ho2: There is no significant relationship between people’s behavior in

respondents’ hometown

Ho3: There is no significant relationship between student’s environment

and his/her academic performance.

1.4 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between the
environment and academic performance of SMAW Students of Amaya
School of Home Industries. However, the specific purpose of this study is
stated as follows:
(1) To investigate the relationship between the family’s treatment towards
the respondent and his/her academic performance.

(2) To find out how teachers’ attitude towards student affects students’
academic performance.

(3) To analyze the correlation between respondents’ social class and its
academic performance.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The result of this research will be beneficial to the following; parents,

teachers, students, various tiers of government, curriculum planner and
examination bodies.

The parents who will see how to motivate their children to learn by
providing them with rich instrumental materials and also make the home
environment friendly for learning by ensuring work habit, parental support
and guidance, intellectual stimulations. Parent motivation has the highest
assessment while facilities provided has the least.

However, the teacher in education will see the need to change their
attitude, mentality and instructional method used in teaching students, so
as to enhance their academic performance. In the same vein, students will
change their attitude, motive, and interest in the learning environment to a
more positive and constructive attitude such as their entry behavior
readiness to learn, interest in what they are expected to learn, motivation
general intelligence which will in turn have effect in their academic
performance.

Again, various tiers of governments which include the federal state

and local government will be more motivated to create an enabling and
conducive learning environment in the secondary institution by building new
classrooms, halls, laboratories as well as rehabilitation of the old
dilapidated ones. Also, by motivating the teachers by prompt payment of
their salaries, giving of incentives, remunerations, award scholarship to
students so as to tackle the problem of socio/economic factor.

Lastly, the secondary school curriculum planner and e6amination

bodies will see the need to reconstruct most subjects of study in the
secondary school program or curriculum so that it will be relevant to the
students.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation

The scope of this study focuses on the relationship between learning

environment and secondary school students’ academic performance in
some selected schools in SMAW Students of Amaya School of Home
Industries.
CHAPTER TWO

Review of Related Literature

This chapter deals with the review of relevant literature in the

investigation of the relationship between environment and SMAW Students
of Amaya School of Home Industries. This research problem therefore is
reviewed under the following sub-headings;

i. Learning Environment

ii. Home Environment

iii. Teachers’ Attitude Towards Student

iv. Academic Performance

2.1 Learning Environment

According to (Gilavand, 2019) the educational environment or

learning environment has an impact on academic achievement of students
while learning environment refers to the diverse physical locations, context
and cultures in which student learn.

The environment needs to be conducive for learning allowing the

students space and time to interact with the learning and teaching process
for the education in secondary school to be effective (Brighouse and
Woods, 2005). There are too many factors to be considered in the learning
environment of the student that affects its academic performance but
according to (Gilavand, 2019) lights, noise, space, and place color have
significant impact on the learner’s mind.

Color of spaces and educational facilities is very important in schools

due to age and physical condition of children and adolescents, because
issue is effective in vitality, mental peace, mobility and efforts of students,
improving the learning process. While so much noise gives much
distraction on a particular learner.

Learning environment is composed of some components that

influence the student’s learning curve. According to Balog (2018) these
components include; people; teaching materials, technical tools, and
learning resources; curriculum, training, and instruction, and physical
environment/learning space.

2.2 Home Environment

Learning environment is composed of some components that

influence the student’s learning curve. According to Balog (2018) these
components include; people; teaching materials, technical tools, and
learning resources; curriculum, training, and instruction, and physical
environment/learning space.

The most significant factor affecting student’s academic achievement

is the Home Environment and there are various factors in home
environment which are lacking in our homes for our children, which has a
negative impact and a low correlation with students’ academic achievement
(Khan, 2019). Home environment stands on how the family of student treat
him/her and what are the attitude of their family toward education and how
their family motivate them to study well in their school to have academic
achievements.

2.3 Teachers’ Behavior

A teacher attitude towards the subject influences the student attitude

towards the subject and learning. A teacher who is motivated and
enthusiastic about student learning will greatly influence the students to
learning process in learning environment. Studies have shown that
teachers exert an extreme influence on students and thus determine to a
very large extent their academic performance (Eksperi, 2019).
Some several factors that affect teachers’ attitude on work are poor
government attitude to teachers, lack of job satisfaction, poor renumeration
and delayed salary (Eksperi, 2019)

2.4 Academic Performance

Academic performance is affected by several factors and those

factors is being considered by the researcher. But according to Magulod
(2018), those several factors are, the level of interest of a particular student
towards learning, father’s occupation, psychological factors such as ‘how
student handles anxiety and its learning environment. Another big factor
that may affect the academic performance of a student is the self esteem of
a student when dealing with examinations. But it is better if we focus on
analyzing the several major factors of environment when we want to
analyze the main factors that affects the academic performance of a
student.

CHAPTER THREE
3.1 Research Method and Procedure
This chapter will discuss under the following sub heading.

Research design

Population of the study

Sample and sampling techniques

Research instrument

Method of data collection

Method of data analysis

3.2 Research Design

The method used in the study is Descriptive correlation, study

in which researcher is primarily interested in describing relationships
among variables without seeking to establish a causal connection.
Researchers use questionnaire to survey and gather data that presents
Relationship between Environment and Academic Performance of SMAW
Students in Amaya School of Home Industries.

3.3 Population of the Study

The population of this study comprised all SMAW Students in Amaya

School of Home Industries.

3.4 Sample and Sampling Techniques

Researchers choose 50 students in SMAW students of Amaya

School of Home Industries, 25 from Grade 11 and another 25 from Grade
12. Researchers use Random sampling it is a part of the sampling
technique in which each sample has an equal probability of being chosen.

3.5 Research Instrument

The questionnaire was constructed by the researcher to collect data

from the student on the study “Relationship Between Environment and
Academic Performance of SMAW Students of Amaya School of Home
Industries. The constructed questionnaire has 3 main parts Section A, B
and C. Section A measures the Factors of Environment the respondent has
while section C measures the academic performance of the respondent in
order to know its relationship with the given factors inside the section A.
The section A and B in the questionnaire has a four-point rating scale of
Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D) and Strongly Disagree (SD)

SA = 4

A = 3

D = 2

SD = 1

The last part of the questionnaire which is “C” measures how well the
overall environment of the respondent and its overall academic
performance.

This section of the questionnaire has a 10-point rating scale where 1

means strongly disagree and where 10 means the student strongly agree
with the statement.

3.6 Method of Data Collection

The data were obtained by means of the structured questionnaire. 25

students per year of SMAW are the samples for the study and were contact
by the researcher. Due to the pandemic, the researcher used to
communicate with the respondent online to get the information needed by
sending them the questionnaires. 50 copies of the questionnaires were
sent to the students and collected immediately after the respondents filled
in their responses.
CHAPTER 4

questions, I can say I have good
academic performance.
2. I learn a lot during our online 405 8.1
class

Pearson R Correlation, it is used to determine if there is significant relationship

between environment and academic performance of SMAW students in Amaya School
of Home Industries.
Researchers used table 1.3 to analyze the relationship between
environment and academic performance of SMAW students in Amaya
School of Home Industries. The correlation between environment and
academic performance of the students is 0.72; r=.72. This shows strong
relationship between the two variables.

Also, the graph shows an upward right pattern and that means there’s
a significant relationship for the two variables which is environment and
academic performance of students.

This result is the same to the literature according to Younas (2020)

and Ekperi (2019) students’ grade and academic performance is affected
by the support of their family and the positive attitude of their family towards
them and towards education. Also, Teachers should have positive attitude
towards their student in order for the student to help them maintain good
self-confidence toward learning. This study suggest that parents and
teachers should have positive attitude towards their children/students and
they should support them on learning in order for the children/students to
appreciate the value of education.

Chapter 5

Summary

1. How the family of a student treat him/her?

The respondents who are in good relation with their family and who
said that their house is the most comfortable place for them got the highest
mean of 3.12. Only 7 of the respondents which is 14% said they disagree
to that statement.

2. What is the behavior of people in the hometown of the

respondents?

38 out of 50 said they have nice neighbors, that get a mean of 3.18.
46 out of 50 respondents said that they feel safe on their hometown and
that get 3.58 mean.

3. What is the perception of respondents regarding the teacher’s

behavior towards him/her?

47 out of 50 respondents said that their teachers treat them well why
only 3 disagree to that statement. It has a mean of 3.22. We can say
that majority of the respondents are treated well by their teachers
meaning they agree that their teachers have positive attitude towards
them.

4. Is there significant relationship between students’ environment and

their academic performances?

The relationship between the student’s environment and his/her

academic performance has strong significance with Pearson’s r=0.72.
0.73 means strong relation between our two variable, the student’s
environment and his/her academic performance. Therefore,
environment of a student is a strong influence towards his/her
academic performance.

Conclusions

1. Environment of a student really affects his academic performance.

2. The family of a student and teacher’s attitude are a major factor

inside the student’s environment which strongly affects their
academic performance.

3. The hometown which also consists of neighbors have an impact to

the academic performance of a student but it is not extreme as the
influence of family and teacher towards academic performance of a
student.

Recommendation

The researchers recommend the following:

Parents- Guide and Support your child to earn academical

achievements and to make them maintain a good academic
performance.

Teachers- Help the student to have high self-esteem towards

learning in order to keep them motivated to learn more.

Future Researchers- Continue this research and focus on the

hometowns factor when it comes to the student’s hometown
competitiveness and the average social class of the people in the
hometown of a particular student.
