HIGH STRENGTH DEFORMED STEEL BARS AND WIRES FOR CONCRETE

REINFORCEMENT
(IS-1786:2008)(Reaffirmed 2017)

Scope:-

This standard covers the requirements of deformed steel bars and wires for use as
reinforcement in concrete, in the following strength grades:

(a)Fe-415

(b)Fe-500.

References:-

The standards listed below contain provisions, which through reference in this text
constitute provisions of this standard.

(a)IS 1599:1985.

(b)IS 1608:2005.

Temperature & Humidity:-

In general, the test is carried out at ambient temperature between 10 and 350 C. Tests

carried out under controlled conditions shall be made at a temperature of 23 ± 50C.

Procedure:-

Nominal sizes:-

The nominal sizes of bars/wires shall be as follows.

6mm,8mm,10mm,12mm,16mm,20mm,25mm,32mm.

Mass of Deformed Bars and Wires:-

Using a bar/wire not less than 0.5 m in length.

Nominal mass for different nominal size are given below:

1)6mm-0.222kg 2)8mm-0.395kg 3)10mm-0.617kg 4)12mm-0.888kg

5)16mm-1.580kg 6)20mm-2.470kg 7)25mm-3.850kg 8)32mm-4.830kg

Tolerances on dimensions and nominal mass:-

Specified Lengths-If bars/wires are specified to be cut to certain lengths, each bar/wire shall
be cut within deviations of +75 or -25mm on the specified length, but if minimum lengths are
specified, the deviations shall be +50 or -0.
Nominal Mass-For the purpose of checking the nominal mass, the density of steel shall
be taken as 0.00785kg/mm2 of the cross-sectional area per meter. Unless otherwise agreed
to between the manufacturer and the purchaser, the tolerances on nominal mass shall be as
in below table.
SI No. Nominal Size Tolerances on the Nominal Mass,%
Individual sample Batch
1 Up to and including 10 -8 ±7
2 Over 10 up to and including 16 -6 ±5
3 Over 16 -4 ±3

For Individual sample plus tolerance is not specified. A single sample taken from batch shall not
be considered as individual sample.
