AS5 - Quote on Sustainable Development

“Sustainable development requires human ingenuity. People are the

most important resource.”
- Dan Shechtman

How can we meet the needs of the present without diminishing

opportunities for the future? This is the essential question of
sustainability. Any society that can’t meet at least the basic human needs
of everyone without leaving equal or better opportunities for those of
future generations is simply not sustainable over time.

Everything of use to humans, including everything of economic value,

ultimately must come from the earth, and beyond self-sufficiency, must
come by way of human relationships or society.

If the usefulness or value of the resources of the earth and society are
persistently degraded and depleted, as has been and continues to be the
case today, there will be no means of sustaining nature, society, and the
economy to meet the needs of future generations.

Furthermore, even the basic needs of many people of the world, if not
most, are not even being met today.
