2. Djevanshir's ways of protection of territorial integrity of Albania.

Varaz Grigor was member of Mihranid dynasty and ruled Albania from 630 th year. Because
Albania was under control of Sassanid state, Albanians had to send their army to help
Sassanidsin the war against Arabs. Varaz sent his son Javanshir to support Sassanids.
Javanshir fought against the arabs nearly 7 years and when he returned, started the rule of
Albania in 642.
His greatest purpose was to protect territorial integrity of Albania and improve it. Javanshir
fought against Sassanids several times and managed to remove them from Albanian
territory and especially from the capital city Barda. In order to defeat and expel Sassanids he
allied with Iberia. On the other hand, the attacks from the Arabs were increasing and that’s
why Javanshir sought help from Byzantium. In 660 the monarch of Byzantium Constantine II
gave him the title of “the duke of Alban” and helped him. In the meantime Khazars were
also attacking Albania and there was the fight on the banks of Kura in 662, where Javanshir
won. In order to put an end to attacks from huns, in 665 he visited them and had to marry
the daughter of the Hun monarch. Byzantium was getting weaker and Arab Chaliphat
stronger and that’s why Javanshir decided to get closer with Arabs and visited the Chaliph in
667. Then the second meeting between the Caliph and Javanshir occurred in 670, where he
agreed to become the vassal and thus Albania managed to save its internal independence.
