Johnny Brenden Has

a Secret
Adversity.

We all face it in our lives, in our work

and at the poker table.

ake this story for example. Imagine losing your father at an early age, being stuck

T with a learning disability as debilitating as dyslexia and then finding out you have
alopecia, a rare disease that makes you lose your hair.
All before the age of twelve.
That would break most people. In fact, prisons are full stories just like that, people that
got handed a few bad beats in life, people without a strong mentor for guidance.
Now, imagine your strong mentor is your grandfather, Mr. Ted Mann, pioneer of the
theatre exhibition industry. The man who built and operated the former Mann Theatre
Corporation based in Los Angeles.
Now you have a fighting chance. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Brenden just a
mere hour before the NBA Draft.

Gavin: What is the best advice your grandfather ever gave you?
I got great advice from my Grandfather. Keep your word. He was big on honesty.

Good advice…
Pay your bills on time, and don’t feel sorry for yourself.

That must have been hard to do, given your circumstances at the time.
Yeah, here I am 12 years old and I was shipped off to boarding school in Boston.

Must have been hard trying to figure out why you are being shipped away…
I will never forget, one time visiting my grandfather back in those days, he took me by the
hand and we went to a place called Rolling Acres…

That’s a facility in Minnesota for young adults who are mentally retarded, right?
Right. He showed me these people who couldn’t even feed themselves. And it put a smile on
their faces just because you were there. My grandfather said to me, “I never want to see you
cry again.”

Wow.
Yeah, it put things in perspective.

So the story is well documented and I won’t rehash it too much here. Your grandfather
tripled what you had saved up and you purchased your first theatre…
In Pittsburgh…

PA?
No, CA. Pittsburg, California, it is near Walnut Creek.

And you grew your empire to what it is today, 86 screens of „Movie Magic“ in the East
Bay of Northern California and Southern Nevada.
That is right, and we always have an eye on the right opportunity. But bigger isn’t always
better…

Don’t tell that to our Poker Angels… But this is a gambling magazine. What is the biggest
gamble you ever took in the business arena?
It would have to be the Modesto project. I brought a theatre complex into the heart of down-
town Modesto. Up until that point, it was a ghost town…

What can get a guy busted out of your tour-

If he thinks he’s too cool for everyone and

What do you want to be when you get older?

Extremely happy

W hen you mention Swedish model, it conjures up images of the Old Milwaukee ad campaign using the Swedish Bikini Team. Brilliant
marketing actually. I mean, it almost made me want to drink Old Milwaukee beer.

Almost.

_____
But Sweden is a hot bed for beautiful models and our feature model this month makes all those previous images of bikini clad Swedish
models just fade away. And she is the spokemodel for a great online poker site called MultiPoker.com. So much better than Old
Milwaukee beer. TopPair had an opportunity to meet and chat with Elita when she was in Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker.

CAJUN BLT FOR 4 Recipe

Ingredients:
1 lb of Black Pepper Bacon. ( I use Bob Evans)
1 Head leaf lettuce
2 (beef-stake) Tomatoes
1 cup of Mayonnaise
3T of Cajun Seasoning
8 or more slices of sourdough bread

Toast the bread and set aside. Cook bacon to desired doneness and set aside on a paper towel to absorb excess grease.
Clean leaf lettuce in cold water, pat dry with towel. Slice tomatoes 1/4” thick. In a bowl mix the mayo with the Cajun seasoning until blend-
ed. You may find that you want more or less mayo depending on how much you want on your sandwich. The mayo should be evenly mixed
with the seasoning so its not too over powering.

Take bread and spread equal amounts of mayo on each piece. Place 1 or more of the leaf lettuce on the bread and add 2 of the sliced tomatoes
and 3 o 4 pieces of the peppered bacon. Put together and you will have one KICKING sandwich!

Hope everyone likes this one as much as the French Toast from last months. In the coming months ill be having some Pico Di
Gallo, Egg Salad, Maple meatloaf, Gazpacho and Chicken dishes for you.
As football season is approaching we might have to do some sport picks for the college and pro teams, either here in the column or
on line. If anyone is interested in that let me know via email and ill set something up and we can all go against each other and see how things
pan out through a free on-line service.

techniques that YOU STICK TO throughout the game.
Take emotion out of it. Just play the proven, step-by-step methods
that will help you CONSISTENTLY win the most money at the table.
And the way you do that is by either playing for years and years

Rocky Mountain
Poker Tour
By Gavin Jerome

oker is being played in the Rockies, but with a twist. You can

P flop a straight at your local watering hole. And if you are really
good, you could be declared the first Champion of the Rocky
Mountain Poker Tour.
The Rocky Mountain Poker Tour is the brainchild of Rico Ramirez, a
retired police officer of 17 years. Seeing an opportunity to bring free poker
into bars as a source of entertainment for playing customers and way to
make money at the same time. He ran the idea past several bar owners and
they loved the idea.
The popularity has been increasing. Rico began the company with 1
tournament per week on March 5, 2005, and in less than 6 months, the
Rocky Mountain Poker Tour has grown to almost 35 tournaments per week
Some of the locations where they host tournaments are: Old Chicago,
Champps Restaurant, Tailgate Tavern Bar and Grill, Celtic House Pub,
Celtic Isles Public House, Ironworks Brewery The Kasbah, Robin Hood
Pub, Adam’s Apple Lounge, Appalousa Gentlemen’s Club, Twister’s
Restaurant.
With the biggest venues being Old Chicago, Tailgate Tavern Bar and
Grill and Champps Restaurant in Colorado Springs. All 3 of these have
averaged approximately 60 players per tournament (not bad for bar enter-
tainment.)
Running a tour like this is not without its challenges however. “The
biggest challenge would be having good dealers stay on.,” says Ramirez.
“For the most part, I have pretty solid dealers, but every once in a while I
have personal issues that come up with my dealers.”
The whole tour will culminate in a big event to determine a tour
champion. The final tournament will be held at Champps Restaurant at
Park Meadows Mall in Littleton, CO, October 1st. It will be the final 100
players after 4 days of semi-final tournaments.
Rico expects approximately 500 players from both Denver and
Colorado Springs to play in our semi-finals over the course of 4 days with
the final 25 players from each semi-final advancing to the October 1st
final.
First place will win a travel voucher for $2,500.00, 2nd place will
receive a 1-month’s mortgage payment up to $1,500. The top ten finishers
will be paid out. All for free poker.
Ever the astute businessman, Rico Ramirez has his eyes on the future.
The Tour runs tournaments in Colorado Springs and Denver, but is expand-
ing to Salt Lake City, UT, within the next month or two. Since Salt Lake
City is still part of the Rocky Mountain region, they felt this would be a
good place to include.
“Our plans are to have 100 tournaments per week in the Denver and
Colorado Springs area by this time next year. I incorporated also as USA
Poker Tour because I plan to eventually take this outside the Rocky
Mountain region.”
Starting in October they will do it all over again and end in March
2006. The winner from that tournament will win a seat in the WSOP for
the $10,000 buy-in into the Main Event.
What really intrigued me was the way players earn chips for the
finals. “All the winners from all of our tournaments receive a certificate
that says where and when they won,” Rico concluded
“Each certificate is worth $1,500 in starting chips. A player may win
as many tournaments as they are able to, but can only bring a total of 3 cer-
tificates to the final tournament for a starting chip count of $4,500. This
causes the players to come back to their local watering hole week after
week, the bar owners love it.
And so do we. TopPair Magazine will be there and cover the final
event as the official magazine of the Rocky Mountain Poker Tour.
