Resume Best Practices

Whenever making a resume, please keep the following practices in mind.

Basic Formatting and Writing Practices


● Don’t write your experience or projects in Paragraphs. Instead use bullet pointers,
don’t use numbered pointers.
● Don’t bold unnecessarily. You can use caps for the relevant terms.
● Make sure that there is just one white space before each word.
● Take care of your punctuations and their spacing. Don’t put space before the
punctuation, put after it.
● Don’t use hyphens (-), use colons (:) to mention Features, Tech Stack or Role.
Ex: Features: Social Authentication, Responsive.
​Take note of the spacing, position of punctuations and the fact that the first letter
of each feature is in caps.
● Avoid using abbreviations. Use full names when mentioning your college, or any
other event or organization name.
● Do multiple proof reads to check for typos, grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.

Social Contacts
● Add your Github, Linkedin profile links
● Add your Dribble link (if you have)
● Make sure your Github/Linkedin profiles are up-to-date.

Education
● When mentioning your Graduation degree, add your Branch Name next to it in
parentheses.
Ex: B.Tech (CSE)
● Don’t use abbreviations for your college/school names, always write full names.
Ex: Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology
● If you are adding the city or the state, separate them by “,”.
Ex: Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra

Experience
● Your work experience should contain ​responsibilities, skills learnt,
accomplishments, appreciation and recognition.
● Avoid making sentences like “I am”, “I was”, “my work was to”.
● Instead frame your sentences like “Responsible for automation”, “Worked on
Technologies like”, “Developed automated threat response”.

Internship & Certification


● For the first pointer, add 1-2 line descriptions (descriptions should be brief and
explanatory).
● Mention Technical Stack learnt/worked on.
Ex: Technologies used: Java, Kafka, Git, Kubernetes ​(if Internship)

Technical Stack learnt: Node JS, React JS, Express JS, MongoDB, HTML, CS ​(if
certification)
● If adding certification links, add hyperlinks and make sure that they are clickable.
● Mention your achievements and if possible quantify them.

Projects
● Add the correct project name, check for the typos, and ensure that the first letter of
each word of your project is in caps.
Ex: Railway System and Travel Experience Sharing Website
● Add your project links.
● For the first pointer, give a brief description of your project.
● For the second pointer, you can add features (or functionalities) of your projects.
Ex: Features: Responsive, Add products to cart, Actual payment gateway. ​(features
of an e-commerce website)
● When adding the features, make sure that relevant terms are in caps.
● Lastly, add your Role and Tech Stack used.
Ex: Role: Frontend Developer | Tech Stack: JavaScript, HTML , CSS. (for a To-Do
App)

Skills
● Mention Computer Languages, Software Packages.
● You should also mention Data Structures and Algorithms.
● Mention Communication Skills.

Co-Curricular Activities
● Mention only relevant achievements and awards (and the relevant terms should be in
caps)
● If you have any certificates or rewards to backup your hobbies, mention them.
● Never use abbreviations when writing events or organization names.
● Make sure you are adding the organization name wherever required.

Ex:
• Google Foobar Challenge: Successfully Completed Google Foobar Challenge.
• ORGANIZER: Code-Shuffle (Coding-Event), ISRO Science Exhibition.
• WINNER: Cyber Bytes (Hackathon)
• Runner Up: Microsoft Azure Hackathon(Bagged 2nd Position), Discovery Challenge
By Scalar Academy (Bagged 3rd Position)
• Participation: Microsoft Azure Workshop, National Science Olympiad, JECRC
Hackathon 1.0, E-Cell (JECRC), Blood Camp (Zarurat)
