The pulley

A pulley is a simple machine, a mechanical traction device, which serves to transmit a force.
Additionally, assembling rigging or hoists serves to reduce the magnitude of the force required to
move a weight.

There are many types of pulleys, even with more wheels and many more practical, but they also
have to have a certain strength, almost the same weight as you want to lift.

Pulley Types

1. The rim: It is an outside area of the pulley and its constitution is essential, since it will adapt to
the shape of the belt it houses.

2. The body: The pulleys are made up of a solid piece when they are small. When their dimensions
increase, they will be provided with nerves and / or arms that generate the pulley, joining the hub
with the rim.

3. The hub: It is the conical and cylindrical hole that is used to couple the shaft. Nowadays, conical
couplings are widely used in pulleys, since their assembly is very comfortable.

Pulley history
It is not known who invented the pulley. As with all simple machines, the origin of the pulley is
unknown. When primitive peoples lifted heavy objects by throwing lianas or other rough ropes
over tree branches, they were using the concept of a single fixed pulley to change the direction of
a force. But since there was no spinning Wheel, its use produced considerable friction. It is
believed that around 1500 a. C. the inhabitants of Mesopotamia used rope pulleys to raise water.

There are no records of when or who first developed the pulley. However, Archimedes is thought
to have developed the first pulley rig, as recorded by Plutarch, who recorded that Archimedes
moved an entire man-laden warship using compound pulleys and his own force.

Pulleys have been used for thousands of years to lift loads. The most prominent and ancient
example is its use on ships and boats. It has been a key tool in hoisting the sails and cargo. Another
important use for pulleys is cranes.

Pulleys have also been used in modern times with various machines and systems. Even in the
space age, pulleys have been an important aspect of the construction and operation of spacecraft
and airplanes. For example, the rudders of airplanes are controlled with a pulley system.

Pulleys are used in everyday life, from vehicles to equipment to move loads, as is the case with
cranes.

What is a pulley for?

The pulley is a simple machine that serves to transmit forces, change the direction of those forces
and, depending on the assembly, reduce the effort applied to move a load.

Some assemblies with fixed pulleys:

In robotics classes we have made a series of assemblies with fixed pulleys to internalize their
operation. To do this, first, we have assembled a structure where all the pulley systems will be
located.
