APPLICATION FOR THE WORKSHOP TO BE CONDUCTED IN THE

FRAME OF THE WASCAL – PAUWES II PROGRAM

(November, 19th – 20th 2018)

Academic year: 2018/2019

PROPOSAL TOPIC TITLE:
……………………………………………………
ASSESSING THE POTENTIAL OF BIOMASS AS A SUSTAINABLE
HOUSE HOLD ENERGY RESOURCE USING ENERGY EFFICIENT
COOKING TECHNOLOGY. A Case of Niamey, Niger
…………………………………………………………………………………
Guidelines for writing your proposal:

1. Write a short proposal of not more than 2 pages describing the “Impacts of Climate
change on Water Resources in Africa” for water students and “Impacts of Climate
Change on Energy Resources in Africa” for Energy students.
2. The policy students should focus more on policy aspects whereas the engineering
students should emphasize on the technical aspects. You can add an additional page
for references, figures, etc. if necessary.
3. You should ensure originality and creativity in your writing since the purpose of this
application is to demonstrate the candidate’s general ability to develop and
conceptualize the identified research topic.
4. Only completed applications shall be reviewed.

INTRODUCTION
Over 500million people in Africa do not have access to electricity and many more are
without access to clean energy cooking. According to a WHO study in 2014, more than
600,000 people die every year from causes pertaining to indoor poisoning. In order to
achieve the agenda 2030 which is ‘’Sustainable Development for all’’, there has been a
global move towards increased investment in Renewable Energy technologies. As a
result of the energy transitions, the world emissions will be kept at a minimal maintaining
the global temperatures a 2⁰C according to the Paris agreement. Nearly 80% of the
people without access are from rural areas in sub-Saharan thus hindering the social-
economic and as development of the rurals areas (IEA, 2014).There have been increased
occurrences of extreme weather changes such as heat waves, longer droughts, rise in the
sea levels among others which have left many displaced from their homes, famine,
starvation, lack of access to clean water among others. Energy systems just as humans
are vulnerable as the production and supply chain of these systems is often affected by
time, culture and food among others.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Niger is one of the countries that have strongly been affected by the changes in the
climate. A low income country itself with an access to electricity below the average and
with more than 80% of the population relying on biomass to provide their cooking needs, it
can be characterised as an energy poverty country (Gado, 2015).The country is looking to
diversify its energy supply means due to the dwindling forest cover because of continuous
use as a source of wood for the existing inefficient cook stoves(Gado, 2015) .These have
been worsened by the prevailing bad climatic conditions characterised by intermittent
rainfall seasons, which have not favoured the continual growth of trees and also other
forms of biomass. There is need to determine the energy efficient cooking technology that
would sustainably meet the growing demand.
General Objective;
The main objective of the study is to assess the technical, economy and environmental
aspects of different energy efficient household cooking technologies in comparison with
the thriving firewood technology against a dwindling biomass resource
Specific objectives

 Determine the existing cooking technologies in Niamey and the thermal energy
requirements depending on their cooking patterns
 Compare the biomass requirements of the energy efficient technologies with the
widespread firewood technology and also through secondary data determine the
impact that changes in biomass production would have on these technologies
 Determine the technology that would be sustainably used in Niamey to provide
cooking needs in Niamey amid changing weather patterns.
METHODOLOGY
