If there is magic on the planet, it is
contained in water……..

WATER AS A RESOURCE
USE IN PROCESSING- Then drawn from surface streams or water bodies for use
in cooling, washing, or other processes
WATER AS A RESOURCE
TRANSPORTATION –
Then water ways, lakes, or abutting ocean are to be used for the transport
of people or goods.
The docking installations and vessels are to be so
designed and operated that the functional and visual quality of the water
is at all times ensured.
WATER AS A RESOURCE
MICROCLIMATE MODERATION - The extremes of temperature are tempered by
the presence of moisture and by the resulting vegetation. This advantage may be improved
by the favorable placement of plant areas and structures in relation to open
water, irrigated surfaces or water-cooled breeze.
WATER AS A RESOURCE
WILDLIFE HABITAT -Lakeshores, stream edges, and wetlands together form a
natural food source and habitat for birds and animals.
Then flora and fauna are to be protected, the indigenous vegetation is to be allowed to
remain standing whenever feasible,
The denser growth is usually concentrated along water edges and converging
swales.
WATER AS A RESOURCE
RE-CREATIONAL USE - Our streams and water bodies have long provided our
most popular types of outdoor recreation such as boating, fishing, and swimming.
Along their banks and shores is found the accretion of cottages, mobile
home parks, and campsites that demonstrate of our love of water.
Problems to be precluded for planning
• Rapid run off
• Erosion
• Siltation
• Flooding
• Drought
• Contamination

WATER EDGES - to best utilize water features, it is
important to understand how to manipulate and treat water
edges. For instance
But it is best to leave a natural shore or
stream bank undisturbed if is naturally stable.
Water levels are to be studied in relation
topographical forms so that the edges of the
pond or lake may create a pleasing shape well
suited to adjacent paths of movement, use
areas, and structures.
As water related uses are intensified and the need for space increased, the
degree of edge treatment is correspondingly increased until in some instances it
may become entirely architectural.
Urban water edge
IN WATER-EDGE DETAILING THESE ARE SOME OF THE FUNDAMENTALS TO BE
KEPT IN MIND:
• Minimize disruption - where the banks or shores are stable, the less
treatment, the better.
• Maintain smooth flows - Avoid the use of elements that obstruct currents or
block wave action.
• Slope and armor the banks - if necessary to, absorb energy where flows are
swift or wave impacts are distractive.
• Provide boat access - to water of desired depth by the use of dock, piers, or
floats with self-adjusting ramps.
• Design to worst conditions - consider recorded water levels and the height
of wind-driven surf.
• Preclude flooding - Hold the floor level of habitable structures above
the 5O-year-flood stage as minimum.
• Promote safety - by the use of handrails, non slip pavement, buoys, markers,
and lights.
• Use weather and water resistant materials, fastenings, and equipment-
corrosion and deterioration are constant problems along the
water fronts.
• Prevent the flow of polluted surface runoff into receiving waters - Such
runoff should be intercepted and treated, or filter by the use of
detention swales.
A stream is a natural drainage way.
Avoid cutting or blocking the flow
with grading or construction

WATER WAY.
It is hard to imagine any planned landscape area –
• patio,
• garden,
• or public square that would not benefit by the introducing water in
natural or architectural form. Its sound, motion, and cooling effects
give it universal appeal.
Water has become symbolic. It connotes and promotes
refreshment and stimulates verdant growth. Its presence can convert
seeming desert into seeming oasis.
