Anger is a powerful emotion. If it isn’t handled appropriately, it may have destructive results for you and those
closest to you. Uncontrolled anger can lead to arguments, physical fights, physical abuse, and assault. If you
feel out of control, walk away from the situation temporarily, until you cool down. Do something physical, such

Preserving Paradise – Environmental Conservation

Launched in 2005, UNESCO’s World Heritage Marine Programme aims to

establish effective conservation of marine areas of outstanding universal value.
It will make sure that the marine sites are maintained and thrive for generations
to come.

What is Offered
Under this Programme the heritage sites get science-based guidance to manage
the place. Money is allocated to maintain the biodiversity of the sites. Experts
are sent to monitor the conservation plans regularly.

Effective Conservation
A sum of 30 000 pounds was given to Cocos Island National Park in Costa Rico to
preserve the stunning marine park. Located 550 km off Costa Rico coast, it is
the only island with tropical rainforest. It offers an ideal laboratory of the
study of biological processes. The underwater world is famous as divers rate it
as one of the best places to view marine life. Its numerous rivers and streams
make it a place of spectacular scenery. Indeed Cocos Island is a paradise on
earth.

Looking Ahead
Many other similar sites have been protected and preserved by World Heritage
Marine Programme.

Section C: Reading Comprehension

[10 marks]
[Time suggested: 25 minutes]

Questions 31 – 40 are based on the following passage. Answer all the questions.

1 It was a cold freezing day a few years ago, when I stumbled upon a wallet
in a street. There were no identification documents inside. There were only three
dollars and a crumpled letter that looked as if it had been carried around for
years.

2 The only thing legible on the torn envelope was the return address. I opened 5
the letter and saw that it had been written in 1954 – almost 60 years ago. I read
it carefully, hoping to find some clues to the identity of the wallet’s owner. It
was a ‘Dear John’ letter. The writer, in the delicate script, told the recipient,
whose name was Michael, that her mother forbade her to see him again.
Nevertheless, she would always love him. It was signed Hannah. 10

3 It was a beautifully written letter. However, there was no way beyond the
name of Michael to identify the owner. Perhaps, I could ring the telephone
records hotline to see if the operator could find the phone number for the address
on the envelope.

4 The operator connected me to her supervisor who said there was a phone 15
number listed with the address. The operator later put me through a woman who
had bought Hannah’s house thirty years ago. She told me that Hannah had
placed her mother in a nursing home. She suggested that I ask the nursing home
for Hannah’s whereabouts.

5 I called and found out that Hannah’s mother had died but Hannah herself 20
was living in a nursing home. I rang up the nursing home and asked if I could
stop by to see her. When I arrived, the director and a guard greeted me at the
door of the nursing home. We went up to third floor and saw the nurse who
informed us that Hannah was indeed watching television.

6 At the doorway, I could see a sweet, silver-haired old lady wrapped in a 25

baby blue cardigan sitting comfortably on a sofa. She greeted us with a warm
smile and friendly eyes that lit her face. Hannah, the name suits her perfectly. I
told her about finding the wallet and showed her the letter. The second she saw
it, she took a deep breath and said, “This was the last contact I had with
Michael”. She looked away for a moment. 30

7 “I was only sixteen and my mother felt I was too young. He was so
handsome.” We both laughed. The director then left her alone. “Yes, Michael
Goldstein was his name. If you find him, tell him I still think of him often. I

never did marry,” she said, smiling through tears welled up in her eyes. “I guess
no one ever matched up to Michael.” 35

8 I thanked Hannah, said goodbye and took the elevator to the first floor.
As I stood at the door, recollecting my meeting with Hannah, the guard asked,
“Was the old lady able to help you?”.

9 I told him that she had given me a lead. “At least I have a last name. But
I probably won’t pursue for a while.” I explained that I had spent almost the 40
whole day trying to find the wallet’s owner. While we talked, I pulled out the
brown leather case, with its red-lanyard lacing and showed it to the guard. He
looked at the case closely and retorted, “Hey, I’ve seen this. That’s Mr.
Goldstein’s. He stays on the eighth floor.”

10 I thanked the guard and ran back to the director’s office to tell him what the 45
guard had said. He accompanied me to the eighth floor. We found him reading
a book. The director asked him if he had lost his wallet. He looked up, felt his
pocket and replied, “Goodness, it is missing.”

11 I explained to him that I found his wallet and apologized that I had read
the letter. I told him that I knew where Hannah was. He called her the next day. 50
A few weeks later, I received a call. The director of the nursing home told me
both Michael and Hannah were getting married. I attended the lovely wedding
– a perfect ending for a love affair that lasted nearly 60 years.
