GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

Origin? thermal energy stored deep inside the earth

Renewable or Nonrenewable? renewable

How is electricity generated? 1. Water or a working liquid is heated (or used

directly in case of geothermal dry steam power
plants) and then sent through a steam turbine.
2. Instead the steam turbine, a generator converts
the thermal energy (heat) to electrical energy
through electromagnetic induction.

Advantages? 1. Hot water may be sent directly to houses to

provide domestic heating.
2. Renewable resource
3. Pollution free
4. Does not have a great impact on the
environment.

Disadvantages? 1. Source is close to volcanoes (may be dangerous)

2. Some plants use lots of water - creates water
wastage and potentially water pollution.
3. High start-up cost
4. Cannot be moved/ transported

Energy transfers? Thermal energy Electrical energy
