ANCYL CRISIS COMMITTEE STATEMENT: A FINAL CALL TO UNBAN THE YOUTH

18 OCTOBER 2020
We, as concerned members of the African National Congress Youth League
(ANCYL) under the collectively agreed description titled the ‘ANCYL Crisis
Committee’, met yesterday to discuss the state of the ANCYL and the next cause of
action in our pursuit of the disbandment of the eldership purporting to be the National
Youth Task Team (NYTT) and all illegitimate provincial structures in the country.
The meeting was attended by members of the ANCYL from all nine provinces,
proving the commitment young people have to reclaiming and rebuilding their
organisation. Our characterisation as a Crisis Committee is precisely because we
are responding to the crisis of the moribund state of our congress youth league
under the illegitimate occupation of youth structures by the eldership.
The meeting noted that young people have over the past 15 months since the
disbandment of the ANCYL National Executive Committee in July 2019, taken
various actions in the interest of reviving their organisation. We have among other,
organised marches in all provinces, written letters to the ANC leadership, submitted
memorandums and requested meetings with the leadership of the ANC at various
levels, including the Secretary General’s Office, demanding the removal of non-
members of the Youth League in the form of the eldership, in all structures of the
organisation. All these actions fell on the selectively deaf ears of the leadership of
the ANC.
On the 76th anniversary of the ANCYL on 10 September 2020, we organised pickets
to all ANC provincial officers where we delivered our memorandum citing our
demands which include:

1. The disbandment of that purposeless stokvel of elders masquerading as

youth leaders as it is inconsistent with Section 2 of Article E of the
Constitution of the ANCYL, which provides that “the organisational control
and programmes of the ANCYL shall rest in the ANCYL membership in
accordance with its Constitution.”
2. That all members of ANCYL PECs in each province be removed from our
Youth League offices and be barred from participation in any decision making
structure on behalf of the ANCYL as they are all illegitimate.

3. We further cited in our memorandum that if the ANC leadership continues to

arrogantly ignore the demands of the youth, we will be left without further
recourse other than to approach the judiciary and/or courts for an appropriate
remedy to this crisis we find ourselves in as young people.

Having noted that the ANC is committed to playing marbles with the Youth League,
and undermine its constitution and that of the Youth League, the Crisis Committee
has resolved to initiate a legal process against the ANC demanding a declaratory
order and interdicts against the NYTT and all ANCYL PECs. We have therefore
instructed our Legal Sub-Committee, comprised of members of the ANCYL to initiate
the legal process.
We shall be delivering our interdict to the ANC on Friday, 6 November 2020, through
a national march of concerned young people from all over the country. This media
statement therefore serves as official notice to the ANC to stop their path of illegality
and delinquency in so far as youth matters are concerned.
As legitimate members of the Youth League, who unlike the elderly, have an
appreciation of the twin-tasks of the congress Youth League, we have further
resolved to undergo a massive recruitment drive targeting 50 000 young people
across the country over the next two months to join the struggle of reviving their
organisation.
We encourage young people to continue serving the youth of South Africa and
continue demanding their right to self-determination. The youth must be unbanned
and the eldership must be rejected.
