Title

Question
Does mass change during chemical reactions?

Hypothesis- According to the law of conversion of mass, (which states in a chemical reaction,
the mass of the products always equals the mass the mass of the reactants), the mass shouldn’t
change

Materials and Equipment

 Erlenmeyer flask with tight- fitting stopper
 Calcium Chloride Solution ( CaCl2 aq)
 Small test tube
 Sodium carbonate solution ( Na2CO3 aq)
 Balance
 Scoopula
 Sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3 s)
 25 ml graduated cylinder
 50 ml beaker
 Hydrochloric acid solution (HCL aq)

Procedure
1. The equipment was checked to make sure it was working. Then a small test tube was
placed into an Erlenmeyer flask and sealed with a rubber stopper
2. The test tube was placed in the test tube rack for safekeeping
3. Then, 25 ml of calcium chloride solution was poured into the Erlenmeyer flask and set
aside
4. Then the filled test tube was carefully placed into the Erlenmeyer flask. The flask was
sealed with a rubber stopper and the total mass of the flask was recorded
5. The assembly was tipped so the two liquids mix. The chemical reaction was observed,
and the observations were recorded
6. The mass of the total assembly was recorded again
7. The results and prediction were checked and any revisions to the prediction were made.
The work area was cleaned, and any materials were safely disposed

Observations
Total Mass Before (g) Total Mass After (g) Change in mass (g)
186.04 g 186.04 g 0.0 g
182.24 g 182.07 g 0.17 g
188.04 g 188.06 g 0.2 g
186.36 g 186.36 g 0.0 g
141.17 g 141.17 g 0.0 g
184.56 g 184.56 g 0.0 g
169.67 g 169.67 g 0.0 g
190.00 g 190.02 g 0.02 g
183.78 g 183.79 g 0.01 g
185.21 g 185.21 g 0.0 g
187.33 g 187.16 g

The results from this lab proved the law of conversion of mass, for example the results of group
one had no change in mass- 186.04-186.04=0.0, which is what the law states. When the two
liquids in the Erlenmeyer flask were mixed, the liquids became cloudy suggesting a chemical
change.

Analyzing
What evidence was there that a chemical reaction occurred in part 1 or part 2?

Evidence that a chemical change had taken place was when the assembly in the Erlenmeyer
flask was tipped over and the liquids became cloudy. This is evidence of a chemical change
because a precipitate was formed.

For your group, how did the total mass after mixing compare with the total mass before mixing,
in both part 1 and part 2?

The total mass for group 7, before and after mixing the assembly had no change. Which was
expected because the law of conservation of mass states, ‘the mass of the products in a
chemical reaction must equal the mass of the reactants.” This was anticipated by the group and
the hypothesis of group 7 was based on this law.

How did your observations of the overall changes in mass compare with your predictions?

The observations of the overall changes were similar to the predictions , because the
predictions were made with the law of conservation of mass in mind which stated that the mass
should not change when a chemical change took place.
