Chapter 2: Introduction Features

Features
Basic Operation The CV-8448 units convert CDI signals to NRZ signals and vice versa.
The CV-8448F, CV-8448FSM, CV-8448-DSM and CV-8448-D can also
convert CDI electrical signals to CDI optical signals (and vice versa) as
well as converting electrical NRZ signals to optical CDI signals.

Backward All CV-8448 models are backward compatible with the CV-2048,
Compatibility CV-2048-M and CV-2048E units (between 16-kbps and 2048-kbps).

Data Rates The CV-8448 provides NRZ/CDI conversions at a variety of data rates
ranging between 16-kbps and 8448-kbps.

• Data rates between 16-kbps and 64-kbps use the balanced

electrical (copper) interface only.

• Data rates between 72-kbps and 2048-kbps use any of the

interfaces.

• Data rates between 2304-kbps and 4608-kbps use either the

unbalanced electrical (UG-1837/G or sub-miniature Triax
connectors) or optical interfaces.

• Data rates between 5120-kbps and 8448-kbps use the

optical interfaces only.

Flexible Timing The CV-8448’s flexible timing options allow not only pass-through
Options synchronous timing, but also GPS timing as well as timing to both the
red and black sides of encryption equipment.

Mark Sense All CV-8448 units come with a user selectable data mark sense setting
for the receive side of the NRZ (Tx Data In signal) enabling the CV-8448
to inter-operate with both positive and negative mark sense signals.

Flash Memory All CV-8448 models store configuration information in flash memory.
This enables the CV-8448 to maintain the configuration through power
cycles.

Requirements
Mounting The standalone CV-8448 can be either rack mounted or desk-top
mounted. If mounted in a standard 19" rack, two standalone CV-8448
units will fit side-by-side when used with DNE's 2-unit CV-8448
Mounting Shelf Kit, Part Number 21001024.

Temperature As long as the ambient operating temperature is between 0oC (32oF)

and 50oC (122oF), no external cooling is required.

Power The CV-8448 units use 110/220 VAC, 47 to 63-Hz, single phase input
power. A 6-ft. A power cord with polarized plug is supplied.

The CV-8448CX, CV-8448FSM and CV-8448F come equipped with a

cable clamp as shown in Figure 3-1. The screw on the cable clamp must
be loosened before the power cord plug is inserted. This will allow the
plug to fully mate into the equipment (and then the clamp can be
tightened).

The Standalone unit (CV-8448CX, CV-8448FSM and CV-8448F) input

connection is a standard 3-prong connector contained in a power
module that has fusing, on/off switch and an input line filter.

The CV-8448-D and CV-8448-DSM input connection is a standard 3-

prong connector located on the back of the unit. The CV-8448-D and
CV-8448-DSM contain a circuit breaker that is controlled by the on/off
rocker switch located on the front of the unit.

Expansion Slot Installation

Each CV-8448 dual unit (CV-8448-D, CV-8448-DSM) is equipped with an
expansion port that enables you to control the converter modules in
two CV-8448 dual units from a single terminal interface. The expansion
port cable, DNE Part Number 75011087 (described in “Expansion Port
Cable” on page 4-7), connects two CV-8448 dual units to essentially
create a “4-PACK” configuration. Figure 4-3 illustrates the installation
of the expansion port cable.

In this configuration the dual unit that is connected to the terminal (via
its CONFIG port) is the “master” unit and the CV-8448-D without the
terminal connection is the “slave”.

• The slots (channels) on the “master” unit are numbered

Slot 1 and Slot 2 (exactly the same as if the expansion port is
not used).

• The slots on the “slave” unit change from Slot 1 and Slot 2 to
Slot 3 and Slot 4, respectively.

• The end of the expansion port cable with Pin 9 populated

must be connected to the “slave” unit.

Timing Chapter 4: Hardware Configuration

Timing
The CV-8448 can accept timing from one the following four sources
(if applicable for the CV-8448 model):

• NRZ

• CDI

• External Clock In

• Internal Clock

When the CV-8448 selects NRZ Clocking, it monitors and tracks Tx Clk
In and all required timing is developed from this source.

When the CV-8448 selects CDI Clocking, it monitors and tracks the CDI
RX CLK which is part of the incoming signal on the RX wire pair from
the CDI source. The NRZ clocks are developed from this source.

When External Clocking is selected the CV-8448 monitors and tracks an

External Clock Source. This clock source is the NRZ bit rate or it can
also be a station clock input of 1 or 5-MHz. When selected, all required
clocks are developed from this source.

The External Clock Interface supports both an RS-422 Interface

operating at the unit baud rate or a station clock interface operating at
1-MHz and 5-MHz. This interface is supported through a BNC
Connector.

When Internal Timing is selected the CV-8448 develops clocking from

the internal oscillators (accuracy +/- 100-ppm).

Chapter 4: Hardware Configuration Timing

Clock Sources There are two possible transmit clock sources for the CV-8448:

• Transmit Clock in (NRZ) from the DTE - Used when the

transmit data is clocked out of the DTE to the CV-8448 by
the terminal timing signal from the DTE
(shown in Figure 4-5).

• Transmit Clock Out (INT) from the CV-8448 - Used when

the transmit data is clocked out of the DTE to the CV-8448
by the transmit clock from the CV-8448
(shown in Figure 4-6).

Chapter 7: Diagnostics Loopback

Loopback
The CV-8448 units operate in one of two states:

• Loopback on

• Loopback off

Normal operation occurs in the loopback off state where data is

interchanged between the NRZ and CDI ports.

With loopback on, the CV-8448 will execute a CDI loopback. The CDI
data is internally looped to the local NRZ terminal. In addition the Tx
CDI and Rx CDI external signals are connected together.
Figure 7-1 illustrates the CV-8448 loopback function.

During loopback, the CV-8448's NRZ port will clock the loop to the NRZ
device. There is no loopback available for CDI data.

Alarms/Indicators Chapter 7: Diagnostics

Alarms/Indicators
Standalone The following describes the alarms and indicators on the standalone
CV-8448 Units CV-8448 units (CV-8448CX, CV-8448FSM and CV-8448F):

Power on is indicated by the LCD Display backlighting.

A loss of reference clock to the CV-8448 is indicated on the LCD

Display as follows:

• REFCLKFAIL

An Rx or Tx FIFO overrun or under-run is indicated as:

• RXFIFOERR (Rx FIFO only)

• TXFIFOERR (Tx FIFO only)

• FIFOERR (Rx and Tx FIFOs)

NOTE: FIFO error messages are maintained on the display until any key is
pressed. The alarm may no longer be valid, but a key must be pressed
to clear the display.

A loss of the signal from the far end unit is indicated as:

• CdiDataFail

CV-8448-D & The CV-8448-D and CV-8448-DSM front panels are equipped with four
CV-8448-DSM status LEDs as described in Table 7-1.

Table 7-1 CV-8448-D & CV-8448-DSM LED Descriptions

Chapter 7: Diagnostics Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting
If the unit fails to operate and the front panel display fails to
illuminate, check the following:

• AC Power Cord

• AC Supply

• Ground

If the PWR LED on the CV-8448-D / CV-8448-DSM or the front panel

display lights on the CV-8448CX, CV-8448FSM and CV-8448F but the
unit fails to operate:

• Verify integrity of cables

• Check Configuration

• Clocks/timing (both CV-8448 and other devices connected)

• Data Rate

• Line Parameters

• Run Loopbacks

Bit Errors Conditions that may directly affect Bit Error Rate are:

• The quality and condition of the CX-11230 cable

• The quality and condition of the connector ends

In addition, if interfacing with a TSSP, warm up time allowed for the

TSSP can vary and affect performance due to the introduction of errors
by the TSSP during the warm-up period.

Mark Sense Operation Chapter 7: Diagnostics

Mark Sense Operation

The CV-8448 Mark Sense parameter changes the receive side (Tx Data
In signal) of the NRZ. Note that the CV-8448 always transmits a positive
mark sense (Rx Data Out signal). The CV-8448 sends a mark as a high/
positive signal (above 5.8 volts) and a space as a low/negative signal
(below 2.2 volts).

Normally the CV-8448 in the default configuration (Positive Mark

Sense) works for the great majority of applications. This section
provides detailed descriptions of how the CV-8448 mark sense
interoperates with other devices in a variety of possibilities and
configurations to help troubleshoot certain situations.

Operation With Table 7-2 and Table 7-3 show how two CV-8448 units interact when an
a CV-8448 end device sends a Negative/Low signal (Normal shown in Table 7-2) or
Positive/High signal (Inverted shown in Table 7-3).

Just like the CV-2048E, the Mark Sense Parameter on the AN/FCC-100
(FCC-100) changes both the “transmit” and “receive” sides of the NRZ
connection.

Figure 7-14 shows the recommended configuration when the

FCC-100 units are both set to Positive Mark as described in Table 7-5.

Chapter 7: Diagnostics Mark Sense Operation

Operation with The following section provides advanced diagnostic information.

Fireberds The examples use Fireberd 6000As in conjunction with CV-8448s
illustrate how the Mark Sense parameter works in detail. Note that the
Normal/Inverted option on the Fireberds only change the transmit side
of the Fireberds.

Example #1
In this example both Fireberds are set to “Normal” which means that
they generate a low/negative signal as a Mark (1). Both CV-8448s are
set to Positive Mark Sense.

The following bullets describe why no inversion errors appear:

• Fireberd “A” sends a low/negative signal (Mark) which

CV-8448 “A” (set to Positive Mark Sense) sees as a Space so it
sends a CDI Space to CV-8448 “B”.

• CV-8448 “B” reads the CDI Space and sends a Space to

Fireberd “B” as a low/negative signal (remember that the
Mark Sense setting has no affect on the NRZ transmit side of
the CV-8448).

• Fireberd “B” receives the low/negative signal and sees a

Mark so it does not display an inversion error.

• In the other direction, Fireberd “B” sends a low/negative

signal (Mark) which CV-8448 “B” (set to Positive Mark Sense)
sees as a Space so it sends a CDI Space to CV-8448 “A”.

• CV-8448 “A” reads the CDI Space and sends a Space to

Fireberd “A” as a low/negative signal (remember that the
Mark Sense setting has no affect on the NRZ transmit side of
the CV-8448).

• Fireberd “A” receives the low/negative signal and sees a

Mark so it does not display an inversion error.

they generate a low/negative signal as a Mark (1). CV-8448 “A” is set to
Negative Mark Sense while CV-8448 “B” is set to Positive Mark Sense. In
this example Fireberd “B” shows an Inversion Error.

The following bullets describe why inversion errors appear only on

Fireberd “B”:

• Fireberd “A” sends a low/negative signal (Mark) which

CV-8448 “A” (set to Negative Mark Sense) sees as a Mark so it
sends a CDI Mark to CV-8448 “B”.

• CV-8448 “B” reads the CDI Mark and sends a Mark to Fireberd
“B” as a high/positive signal (remember that the Mark Sense
setting has no affect on the NRZ transmit side of the CV-
8448).

• Fireberd “B” receives the high/positive signal and sees a

Space so it displays an inversion error.

Chapter 8: Maintenance Preventive Maintenance

Preventive Maintenance
There is no preventive maintenance schedule for the CV-8448 units.
Upon receipt of the converter from the manufacturer, it is
recommended that the unit be visually inspected. Scheduled cleaning
of the CV-8448 unit will be as required by the environmental
conditions of the installation site. Exterior surfaces may be cleaned
with an antistatic cloth using a commercially available nonabrasive
cleaning agent.

WARNING: Remove the power cable from the CV-8448 unit

before attempting to clean the electrical connectors.

Cleaning Dirty electrical connectors may be cleaned with a brush dipped in

Electrical isopropyl alcohol (industrial grade). Allow the connector to air dry
Connectors before use.

Optical Optical connectors and ports must be kept free of dust and other
Connector contaminants. The CV-8448F, CV-8448FSM, CV-8448-DSM and
Storage CV-8448-D come equipped with dust protectors and/or boots (factory
installed prior to shipment). See “Cleaning Optical Connectors” on
page 8-38 for more information.

• Do not remove the dust protectors until immediately before

you mate the optical connectors.

• Store the dust protectors in a convenient location for future

use.

• Clean and install the dust protectors/boots whenever you

separate an optical connector.

Fuses (Standalone Units) Chapter 8: Maintenance

Fuses (Standalone Units)

The only user replaceable part on the standalone unit (CV-8448CX,
CV-8448FSM and CV-8448F) is the AC line fuse. The CV-8448-D and
CV-8448-DSM use a circuit breaker controlled by the on/off power
switch on the front panel. Refer to Figure 8-1 and use the following
procedure to replace the fuse:

1. Remove the power cord plug from the rear of the unit, then
pry open the retainer door on the AC Input Power module.
2. Pry the desired fuse holder out of the AC Input Power
module.
3. Remove the fuse from the fuse holder and replace it if
necessary.

Chapter 8: Maintenance Replacing Modules

Replacing Modules
The CV-8448-D and CV-8448-DSM come equipped with two field
replaceable NRZ/CDI converter modules (slots). For direct
replacements, single-mode to single-mode or multimode to
multimode, the modules are “hot-swappable” (they can be replaced
without the need to power down the chassis). In addition, the removal
of one of the modules has no effect on the operation of the other
module.
Changing a module from multimode to single-mode or single-mode to
multimode requires you shut down the unit and remove the power
cord.

Cleaning Optical Connectors Chapter 8: Maintenance

Cleaning Optical Connectors

Fiber optical cable consists of two main components; an outer
“cladding” and an extremely thin glass “core”. For single-mode, the core
can be as small as 8 to 9 µm in diameter. For reference, a human hair is
typically greater than 50 µm in diameter. Light travels down the core of
the fiber reflecting off the mirror-like interface where the core and
cladding meet1. Dust particles as small as 1 µm diameter on the optical
fiber end, obscuring the core, can significantly degrade performance.
Particles 8 µm in diameter or larger on the end of the core can cause a
complete failure of the optical system.

NOTE: Avoid touching the ends of optical cables or ports. If touched they
must be cleaned.

Optical connectors must be cleaned immediately before being mated

even if dust protectors were installed.

To clean the optical connectors you will need:

• Lens-grade, lint-free tissue (the type sold for eyeglasses or

camera lenses works well)

• Industrial grade isopropyl alcohol (note that the type sold

for medicinal use is not suitable since it is diluted with
water, mineral oil and other contaminants)

• Canned dry air (used for optical transmitter or receiver

ports)

Use the following procedure to clean the end of an optical connector:

1. Fold the lint-free tissue so that it is at least 4-layers thick.

2. Saturate the tissue with isopropyl alcohol (industrial grade).

3. Use the tissue to thoroughly clean the outside of the optical

cable connector ferrule.

4. Move to a clean spot of the tissue ensuring it is still

saturated with alcohol and is still at least 4-layers thick.

5. Put the clean part of the tissue against the end of the
connector ferrule.

1. The mirror-like characteristics are due to the difference in refractive

indices of the core and cladding material.

Page 8-38 CV-8448 Operation & Installation Guide Part No. 24001109-000
Revision F
Chapter 8: Maintenance Cleaning Optical Connectors

6. Place your fingernail against the tissue directly over the

connector end and “scrape” the end so that it is thoroughly
clean.

7. Use the compressed air to remove any dust from the optical
transmitter or receiver port that the cable is to be mated to.
Do not insert any liquids into the ports.

8. Mate the cable to the port immediately (before it can collect

any dust).

Clocking Configurations
The CV-8448 is equipped with various timing options which enable it
to adapt to almost any network configuration. Your configuration may
vary due to your network design. This section provides an overview of
typical clocking configurations used with the CV-8448 that you can use
as a guide when adapting the CV-8448 to your network.

Network In most cases the CV-8448 will recover the master clock (PRS) from the
Timing (CDI) transmission equipment via the CDI connection. When the CV-8448
connects to a Trunk Encryption Device (TED) it needs to ensure that the
TxData and TxClkIn signals from the TED are in phase. Figure A-1
illustrates this configuration where the CV-8448 recovers its master
clock from the CDI interface but uses the Tx Clock In signal from the
TED NRZ interface to clock the Tx Data into the CV-8448. Note that the
TED uses the CV-8448 TxClkOut signal to generate its Black Station
Clock (BSC).

Clocking Configurations Appendix A: Applications

Wrap-Around Wrap-around timing (terminal timing) is often used in cases where the
Timing master clock is on the red side of the Trunk Encryption Device (TED).

BSC Directly to TED

In this configuration the master clock (PRS) is wrapped around to the
black side of the TED and into the Black Station Clock (BSC) input. The
CV-8448 then receives the master clock from the TED via the NRZ
interface and then uses that signal to time data to the TED.
Figure A-2 illustrates this configuration.

CV-8448 External Clock Input

You can wrap around the PRS directly to the CV-8448. In this
configuration the CV-8448 recovers the master clock signal via its
External Clock Input connector. The CV-8448 then sends the recovered
clock to the BSC input of the TED. The TED then uses the signal for the
TxClkIn signal to the CV-8448. This ensures that the Tx Data and
Tx Clock In are in phase. Figure A-3 illustrates this configuration.

AN/FCC-100 Appendix A: Applications

AN/FCC-100
This section describes how to connect an AN/FCC-100 to a CV-8448
unit and provides wiring diagrams for the cables required to do so.

Figure A-4 through Figure A-7 show various configurations of the

AN/FCC-100(V), KG94/194, and CV-8448 units.

Figure A-8 shows the Red/Black cable which is common for these
configurations. You can make this cable or purchase it from DNE (Part
Number 75011026-002 (see Table 2-9 in Chapter 2, "Introduction").
Key features of this cable is that it is designed to the DNE AN/FCC-100
pinouts and that it provides connection of the recovered clock out of
the multiplexer to the External Clock input on the CV-8448 units. This
last feature is critical to supporting Port-16 timing of the network.

The bridging of the NRZ and CDI protocols offers valuable benefits for
the AN/FCC-100 user when operating the multiplexer with
cryptographic equipment, video teleconferencing, and TASDAC
routers. The CV-8448F and CV-8448CX units offer a 48/5V DC power
supply to supply external power to a crypto device.

Operation of the AN/FCC-100 with a cryptographic device can be

greatly simplified with the CV-8448 units. With the CV-8448 units, the
data multiplexer can be co-located where operators can immediately
detect framing problems, and more importantly, operation of the AN/
FCC-100 with the crypto over a NRZ interface permits the AN/FCC-100
to automatically initiate a system re-synchronization. The CV-8448
provides similar functionality for DNE TAC-Series ATM users with the
additional capability of transmission rates that reach 8448-kbps.

CDI Receive Figure A-4 shows the timing configuration with a network master clock
Clock received on the CDI. This is the most common configuration and
follows the basic principles described in “Network Timing (CDI)” on
page A-3. Use this configuration when you have AN/FCC-100 to
KG-194/KG-94A red/black cables (DNE Part Number 75011026-002)
and the master clock (PRS) is on the network (CDI) side of the CV-8448
units.
