Experimenting the alternative, which relays on ubiquitous mobile camera and Internet
connectivity.
Description
Summary
In the most part of world, initiatives for cash less transaction in public transport services is
facing major obstacles in terms of large upfront and running cost of the system. Majorly the
high cost is linked with top down, centralized implementation of system with huge
investment in specialized smart card readers and its maintenance from carrier side. In India,
the past adoption for this system is yet to be gained its momentum [1],[2].
1. What is the feasibility of QR code[3] based payment for Transport services as it requires
minimal upfront for implementation using widely available tools, that is smart phones and
mobile Internet?
2. Is there any room for third party mobile payment as 'software as a service' with focusing
to transport service delivery personal (for example focusing conductor[4], as their job
convenience tool) rather than the carrier?
3. How this adapt to the usual business, such as handing over the daily collection to the
carrier?
With due consideration for required speed in processing the payment, Internet connectivity
in almost a mobile point of sale situation.
Public Transport component to be considered would be parking lots, share Auto rickshaws
[5], few routes of mini transport buses.
Evaluation will be with due consideration for open source distribution of methods used in
trail phase and data for further assessment.
How much will emissions be reduced or sequestered vs. business as usual levels?
A report [6] says 9% increase in the revenue by using smart card system Oyster card in
public Transport services. Considering this, it can be assumed that it would be reduced 5-
7% of private transport and hence that much proportion of carbon from Transport related
emission. By implementing this in Indian scenario a minimum 5% reduction in CO2
emission from as usual scenario from Transport sector can be expected.
