Impressions from Samsung rising

Samsung is one of the most recognized brand companies in today’s advanced world, where

technology is an important part of the life of people. Samsung has several huge industry spheres

varying from construction, advertisement, financial services, production of electronics devices, and

semiconductors. The main part that is going to be covered in this paper will be related to Samsung

Electronics’s history. It includes the development of the firm, how it became such a famous brand,

and what kind of difficulties the company, its managers, employers, and employees faced until they

reached the current status. The source that would be used for this paper is the book written by

Geoffrey Cain namely “Samsung Rising”. The book informs the reader about the system and the

issues that the company had including deeper detailed information collected from interviews from

more than 400 hundred employees, employers, business people, and other related officials. After

finishing the book, I would like to tell you about three main chapters that have taken most of my

interest and attention, which are “Glorious Chairman”, “The Next Big Thing” and “Cult Steve”.

Chapter 8 that has a topic of “Glorious Chairman” tells the reader about the activities done by

chairman Lee II who has influenced his employees, engineers, managers, and executives of the firms

with his speech of “New Management Initiative”. According to this chapter, the chairman is looking

for the issues and problems in the company to understand why the current level of production and its

quality is not satisfactory to the extent that the firm is in a difficult situation. To understand this

mystery trouble, Lee refers to the Japanese industrial designer, Fukuda. He informs the chairman of

the main fundamental issues that the company has. He points produce’s form and color, its quality,

development of the value, and understanding of the convenience. After getting enough data and

understanding about the issues, the chairman starts analyzing the culture, how to influence it, and

makes a change so that these issues will be solved. He starts thinking about the speech by having

only 3-4 hours of sleep for a couple of days and finally makes a speech in front of his executives and
audience that consists of 6-8 hours in a day and lasts for 3 days. However, this will not affect the

culture of the company so he decided to make speeches to other parts of the company as well and as

a result, he made speeches amounting to 350 hours that are 48 talks in total. The main aspect of this

chapter that influenced my way of thinking is the actions done by chairman Lee that despite the

difficulties he came across, the results became positive in longer terms. His passion and power had

surprised everyone and created an ideal symbol of the leader of his times.

The Chapter is 21 which is called “The Next Big Thing” which informs us about the marketing

campaign that brought success to the company at the beginning of the project. The American

marketing team that has been chosen by Samsung Company to promote its products in the US market

of smartphones through the creation of the campaign. It was taken in action without receiving the

acceptance of headquarter and executives of Samsung company on time since they did not reply as

quickly as it was necessary. Indeed, the campaign was successful and it helped to gain popularity

instantly in social media platforms and even among iPhone users. However, the company of

Samsung and its top managers bounced unexpectedly with disagreement about the marketing

decisions done by the American team. They told the risk of the action was too huge for the company

status and it was disrespectful towards the Company’s top executives. Due to these actions and

results, the American team received public humiliation, which affected their popularity status

negatively and made them as a form of worst teams of marketing. Despite these consequences, the

American team was supported by the son of the chairman of Samsung Company, who was the

marketing chief. The summary from this chapter that I got is a deeper understanding of the Corporate

culture difference between Korean management and US ones.

The following chapter that exceptionally affected my comprehension of individuals was the fun of

Apple and how they follow the settings gave by the organization. Funs of Apple and iPhones are

considered here as individuals who trust the organization that they appreciate without taking

profound care about the deep understanding of the firm and its products. They follow the ideality and
hairsplitting favored by Steve Jobs. Notwithstanding, adherents of Android telephones are portrayed

as savvy clients that favor increasingly created applications and projects rather than simple style and

structure of the telephone and applications that telephones have. To evade visual deficiency

following of Apple brand, promoting chiefs of Samsung attempted to do counterattack against its

fundamental rival. The inclination and understanding got through perusing this part gave a reader an

assortment sort of sentiments, for example, shock, deep analysis, estimation of the value, and

investigating of what is happening in the current days that have been happening and what had been

done before.

As a reader of this book, I can say that author illustrated all motives and facts that happened in the

past, which actually brought the company to the stage that it is currently on. The name of the book

was chosen properly and clearly for future readers, since it may give an impression about what the

book will tell about. A good recommendation for future readers would be to pay special attention to

the parts which tell the exact historical moments related to the business and management field

experienced in real life. Moreover, this book is good for people who are interested in business and

administration or going to major in this field, as it tells about several main features of the business

structure and style at the international level.
