Individual and Team

Decision Matrix
Sean Burke, Zane Walas, Simon Moattar, Nico Hadiaris
The purpose of this document is to help us as a team decide which combination of our design
components best completes the needed tasks of our product. First, we had to come up with the
tasks that our product must complete. Next, we had to assign a weight to each of these tasks,
the higher the weight, the more important the task in our eyes. Then, we took our top three
potential designs and graded them on how well we believe they would complete each of the
tasks. By multiplying the “value” by the “weight,” and then adding up the total score, we
determined which design was the best overall, and which aspects of each design were most
valuable.

● Selection 1
○ Activation Method: Attached to on/off switch of conveyor belt. Our mentor
recommended this because it keeps the design more simple.
○ Sanitation Method: Spray/mist. This method was not recommended by our
mentor, but we believe it is simple and practical to implement.
○ Primary Sanitizer: J-512 Sanitizer. This sanitizer is already used by cashiers
when sanitizing their conveyor belts. It is proven in effectiveness and it requires
little rinse
○ Secondary Sanitizer: Bleach and water mixture. This mixture is also already
used, and it can be sprayed as well.
○ Conveyor Belt Drying Method: Rubber edge, similar to a windshield wiper. This
method of drying is preferable because it requires no movement.

● Selection 2
○ Activation Method: Attached to on/off switch of conveyor belt. Our mentor
recommended this because it keeps the design more simple.
○ Sanitation Method: Sponge soaked in chosen sanitizer. Our mentor advised
against the spray/mist method of sanitation, so this was the next best option in
our opinion.
○ Primary Sanitizer: J-512 Sanitizer. This sanitizer is already used by cashiers
when sanitizing their conveyor belts. It is proven in effectiveness and it requires
little rinse
○ Secondary Sanitizer: UV Lamp. This method of sanitation may not be very
effective under the circumstances it would encounter with our product’s purpose
due to the limited exposure time of the conveyor belt surface. However, this
method leaves no residue, and proven options are already available.
○ Conveyor Belt Drying Method: Rubber edge, similar to a windshield wiper. This
method of drying is preferable because it requires no movement.
● Selection 3
○ Activation Method: Attached to on/off switch of conveyor belt. Our mentor
recommended this because it keeps the design more simple.
○ Sanitation Method: Spray/mist. This method was not recommended by our
mentor, but we believe it is simple and practical to implement.
○ Primary Sanitizer: Bleach and water mixture. This mixture is already used, and it
can be applied easily with a sponge.
○ Secondary Sanitizer: UV Lamp. This method of sanitation may not be very
effective under the circumstances it would encounter with our product’s purpose
due to the limited exposure time of the conveyor belt surface. However, this
method leaves no residue, and proven options are already available.
○ Conveyor Belt Drying Method: Rotating bristles. Using a sponge may cause the
sanitizer to accumulate in larger drops, which would possibly leave residue
despite being hit with a rubber edge. We believe the rotating bristles are a more
thorough method, but a more complicated one to implement.

Conclusion:
Cleans Thoroughly: Due to the better score of selection 1 and 2 we decided to settle on the
spray/mist method.

Consistent and reliable: Selection 2 was the most consistent and reliable so we decided to use
the J-512 sanitizer and a rubber wiping blade.

Easy to refill: Selection 2 did best on easy to refill because the Uv light only requires power but
the sponge would be annoying to maintain so we decided to use spray/mist and UV light.

Cleans in a timely matter: Selection 3 was best at speed because the mist is extremely fast and
the rotating bristles act to dry the belt very fast. Because of this we decided to use mist with
J-512 sanitizer and either a wiper or stationary bristles.
Easy to Install: Selection 2 was easiest to install because it only has a uv and a sponge and that
is why we decided to use UV for our final product.

Easy to manufacture: Selection 1 is easiest to manufacture because it has no bulbs and is pure
mechanics.

Final decision. ON off switch attached to belt and motion detector. Primary spray using J-512.
Secondary UV light. Drying mechanism as a wiper.
