Week #6 Assignment #2 & 3

Proof of Efficacy Document for your ‘You Have the Power’ Energy Transfer Device
This week you will spend time working on your Energy Transfer Project. I would suggest investing more time
this week on it so you can spend slightly less time on it next week and more time preparing for your AP
Exams (if you are taking them). There are 6 critical items below (not including the actual creation of the
device) some of these items will take longer to complete then others. Think about creating a Gantt chart to
plan your project work time.

Proof of Efficacy Document for your ‘You Have the Power’ Energy Transfer Device
The document can have paragraphs, bullet points, diagrams, pictures, tables, etc. It should include:
1. Lightcycle - No need for batteries to power a bike light, as long as you pedal, you have light. (If I could
reconfigure the device so that the bike was right side up.)
2. Video attached to assignment
3. First, my body converts chemical energy into mechanical energy by turning the pedals of the bike. This
mechanical energy in the pedals goes through the gears and turns the wheel of the bike. As the wheel of the bike
turns, the band connecting the bike to the CD pulley gets pulled, and the CD wheel turns. The CD wheel turns the
metal straw, which is connected to the lantern handle. As the straw rotates, the lantern handle turns. The turning of
the lantern handle turns a generator in the lantern, which takes the mechanical energy and converts it into
electrical energy. This electrical energy flows through the light of the lantern, and the remaining energy is lost as
light.
4. At first, I had a smaller generator that was not attached to a lantern. I had the system set up so that the rotation
of the metal straw would cause a rubber band to turn the generator, but this generator was not strong enough.
After this setup would not work, I tested the generator in a more efficient setting, and its maximum production
would not light an LED. I then switched to the lantern, and it worked well. The lantern is far more efficient because
the handle is connected to gears which spin the magnets around the copper coils, generating an electric current. I
believe the gears lose a lot less energy than a rubber band, which can slip and lose traction when spinning.
5. The lantern has either one or five 0.48 watt LEDs, and one of these takes 6V I think.
6. Not sure what to do here
