OBJECTIVE: add/subtract rational numbers GRADE LEVEL: 7th Grade

Objective/Purpose: TEKS 7th grade: (3) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to add,
subtract, multiply, and divide while solving problems and justifying solutions. The student is expected to:
(A) add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers fluently;

Students will learn how to apply adding in rational numbers.

Materials/Resources/Equipment Needed:
 Index Cards
 Paper for foldable
 Markers
 https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-7/identify-rational-numbers (game)
 Deck of cards
 Candy

Instructional delivery: Students need to know how to identify a rational number and an expression. They will be playing a
quick game as a class. After the game students will form a small group and do the hands-on activity with index cards. The
index card activity and game will determine if students can identify the rational number and expressions of addition
rational numbers. Students will create a foldable and then I will show them how to do some of the problems. Students will
then play a game with a deck of cards, to do practice problems. After they will critically write their exit tickets to check for
understanding and end the classroom for the next class.

Anticipatory Set (ENGAGE): Students will form small groups of 3-4 per group. Count 1-4 and all 1’s will be one
group as well the 2’s, 3’s and 4’s. Once groups are formed, they will be given an index card for the students to write
their response on the game problems. The game is online (https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-7/identify-
rational-numbers) and it consist of identifying the rational numbers. The questions are closed ended
questions: Yes or No. The students will learn to identify rational numbers. An example is: ¾ is this a
rational number? Yes or no. This will continue for about 5-10 problems. As they answer these they will
write the number and next to it write yes or no. Students are highly encouraged to work in groups.

(EXPLORE): Students will be given index cards with addition rational expressions and some with no rational numbers.
Students will then have to talk amongst each other to identify if it is an addition rational expression. On the board there will be
a yes or no category for if it is an addition rational. One student per group will then read the index card and place it where their
group decided. There will be taped next to the board so students will tape it on the category where they placed it an explain as
to why. The examples that will be given are:
 Sqrt(3) + 0 Answer: No
 Pi + 0 Answer: No
 -3 + - sqrt(2) Answer: No
 3 (4/2) + (1/2) Answer: Yes
 .02 + .13 Answer: Yes

Model (EXPLAIN):
Flip video link: https://youtu.be/3msPYsp_va0
For the flip video I will show the students how to create a foldable. The foldable will be folded into a hotdog
style but leaving about an inch at the bottom to write Addition. We will be writing the information horizontally
and on the top we will write the main topic (Rational numbers). Define and give examples on how a rational
number looks. Inside the foldable we will have the rules of rational numbers and then examples of using the rules.
Independent Practice (ELABORATE): Students will be playing a game called (round of cards). They will be
playing for themselves. The rules: Form two lines equally and the first two people from each line will solve a
problem using the rules for adding rational numbers. The teacher will pick a card and say the problem written on
the card. The students will then solve and must use the rules in order to get it correct, whoever gets it the fastest
and CORRECT they will proceed to the next round. This will continue until the first round is over. Then the ones
who one the first round will proceed with the next round. The rules are the same until there are no more students
and only one winner.
Cards will be examples like these:

Check for Understanding (EVALUATE):

I will be observing of student preparedness of their foldables, student work samples, and participation in group
activities of the index cards. Check answers of round of cards and ask questions throughout the lesson.

Closure:
Students will be given an index card and they will do an Exit ticket. The Exit ticket will be the 3-2-1:
3 things I learned
2 things I found interesting
1 question I still have
