1.0 ABSTRACT

This Mechanics of Materials open ended laboratory is a platform that help students to
integrate the fundamental knowledge of Mechanics of Materials for solutions in order to
fulfill the requirement of open ended instruction. Generally, beams can be classified as
one of the most important of structural members. When a beam is loaded in vertical
direction, internal stresses occur in every section of the beam. Students need to identify
the application of the static load of applied on a simply supported beam under a few
consideration of lifting variable masse at specific distances. Objectives of this experiment
are to investigate the existence of internal shear force and bending moment developed in
beam based on external loading applied and to also to identify the relationship between
load and displacement, and estimate the modulus of elasticity of the materials. Shear and
bending moment diagrams are analytical tools used to help perform structural design by
determining the value of shear force and bending moment at a given point of a structural
element such as a beam. While, deflection at any point on the axis of the beam is the
distance between its position before and after loading. Students should investigate the
relationship of external load and beam lengths variables against the development of
internal forces and the deflection behavior by using the three main apparatus provided in
Light Structure Laboratory. The variable of the masses applied and specific displacement
within the beam is designed for the experiment. Overall the theoretical values are higher
than the experimental values, and the percentage of the error is quite significance., there
was some errors. So, it can be concluded that the experimental values and theoretical
values has different of ratio may due to few reasons that have been discussed in this
laboratory report.
