Some people believe that sport is an essential part of school life

for children, while others feel it should be purely optional.

Discuss these opposing views and give your own opinion.

The question of whether sports should be made compulsory or not in the school

curriculum has been a source of controversy in recent years. Although strong support for

that physical activities should be made optional exists, I hold the belief that sports bring a

wealth of benefits to students.

On the one hand, some people state that sports should not be mandatory. To commence

with, sports are considered a waste of time because it o

ccupies time which could be better

spent on academic subjects or exam preparation. Secondly, because of the fact that not all

children have an aptitude for sports, forcing them to take up sports they do not feel

passionate about may dissatisfy them. Besides, there exists a great concern of parents

regarding risks of athletic activities. This is because sport-related injuries such as

bruises, sprains, or joint injuries potentially happen to children.

On the other hand, crucial benefits of sports in the holistic development of children

cannot be ignored. This is because sports engage students in bending, sprinting, or

jumping, which strengthens the heart and burns their calories. Thus, they are preventive

measures against cardiovascular diseases, or obesity. Furthermore, sports instill in

children teamwork and cooperation. To clarify, to achieve a common goal in team sports,

teammates must exchange skills or discover optimum strategies together and therefore

enhance their performance. Finally, students can acquire sportsmanship through sports

matches. They can learn how to perform magnanimous behaviour with their opponents or

accept defeat and further self-improvement.

In conclusion, I believe that sport should be compulsory for school children because of

the positive effects on their overall development outweighs the negatives.

There has long existed a debate revolving around the question of whether or
not should physical education be on students’ syllabus. Some consider it to be a
waste of time whereas others strongly advocate it, stating it is a crucial part of the
comprehensive development of children. I am in favour of the latter and in this essay,
I will clarify my point of view.

To commence with, especially in this modern society, we highly value the

cooperation which is exactly what practicing sports offers. By playing sports, we are
actually learning the art of being able to work harmoniously, training how to be
cooperative, tolerant, and most importantly, showing solidarity towards a collective
goal. Altogether, these help students to not only excel in studies but also come
handy in specific situations further in life.

Additionally, taking up sports is a unique and enjoyable way of acquiring

knowledge. The techniques required in sports are by no means easy, therefore,
mastering them will also improve other skills such as cognitive skills, logical thinking
and predicting skills, fast reacting skills, etc. Besides, playing in an energetic
environment will be invigorating which would clear students’ stressful mind;
consequently, enhance their academic performance.

On the other hand, some raise their objections due to the fact that sports are
potentially dangerous. However, high-quality protective equipment and equitable
rules have been brought in regarding this issue. Furthermore, by encountering
certain hardship, students are propelled to work harder to overcome them, hence,
build for themselves strong stamina.

In conclusion, the positive effects that sports have on children simply

outweigh the negative ones. Therefore, I think it would be logical to assume that
learning to play sports play an indispensable role in the development of children.
