Grade Level College

Estimated Time 50 Minutes

Summary of the Lesson In this lesson, students will be introduced to the first two
steps of the SIOP process, lesson preparation and building
background knowledge. The students will follow these
steps as they draft a lesson outline.

Materials Required ● Powerpoint

● Computer
● Assignment Worksheet
● Piece of paper and Pencil/Pen

Academic Standards

Objectives Students will be able to:

● Identify the steps of Lesson Preparation and
building background in the SIOP model.
● Draft a plan implementing the steps of Lesson
Preparation and Building background.

Assessment There will be questions during the powerpoint presentation

that will be used as formative assessment by the presenters
to make sure the class is following and understanding the
content.
The major assessment for the assignment will be the
presentation of group work as the groups engage in the
aspects of lesson preparation and building background
knowledge for the SIOP model. This will also be a
formative assessment and allow for teacher and class
feedback.
Vocabulary ● SIOP
● Language Objective

Procedure Before:
The teachers will begin the lesson by showing a video that
gives an overview of the SIOP model. They will ask the
students their impression of the SIOP model.

Statement of learning:
Today you will learn how to use the SIOP methods of
lesson preparation and building background in order to
help teach all of your students, especially ELL students
effectively.

During:
The teacher will first read the class their objectives for the
day.
The teachers will then begin the prepared powerpoint
presentation. The powerpoint follows the scope of lesson
preparation and building background knowledge in the
SIOP process. The teacher will begin by explaining the
steps of lesson preparation. The first activity for the day
will ask students in groups, to develop a language and
content objective based on an assigned subject area. To
complete this, the teacher will direct the students to the
lesson worksheet that will be sent to the class beforehand.
This worksheet will be used for all subsequent steps of the
SIOP model that are practiced during the lesson. These
objectives will then be shared and evaluated by the
teachers in order to encourage growth. The presentation
will continue. After reviewing the other steps involved in
lesson preparation, the students will return to their groups
to add to their lesson. Now they will include vocabulary,
supplementary materials, and meaningful activity as part of
the lesson plan.
The teachers will then move on to the building background
knowledge aspect of the SIOP model. This will begin with
a video to introduce the concept. There are a plethora of
building background knowledge strategies. Each student in
the class will be assigned one strategy to look up and
explain to the rest of the class. This brief activity will take
about two minutes and will be completed orally, not on the
worksheet. The teacher will then explain the steps of the
SIOP model and key components in building background
knowledge. Once the three key steps are introduced, the
teacher will direct the students to return to their groups to
complete their planning using the steps of building
background knowledge. These will be shared and
evaluated for feedback by the teachers and the class.
The teacher will then conclude by addressing the SIOP
lesson plan and encourage students to reflect on their
learning and the progress they have made with the SIOP
process.

After:
The teacher will address the learning styles that were
included in the lesson. The SIOP model will continue to be
addressed in subsequent lessons in the coming weeks.
