I. Overview

This course introduces skills and techniques intended to develop

students keyboarding skills. Correct keystroking and development
of acceptable speed and accuracy levels is stressed. They will also
be provided with opportunities to apply these skills in the
formatting of letters, tables, reports and other kinds of personal,
personal-business and business documents. This course provides the
basic skills in keyboarding that is necessary for future academic
requirements and job placement. It is geared towards students who
are: a.) new to keying b.) looking to increase keying speed and
accuracy c.) interested in learning a basic overview of document
processing.

II. Objectives

1. Demonstrate proper body position at the keyboard.

2. Demonstrate the proper touch method of keyboarding.
3. Type on a keyboarding at a minimum speed of 30wpm on a 5-minute
typing test with no more than one error per minute.
4. Apply proper formatting procedures to email, reports, tables, and
other documents using appropriate word processing commands.
5. Demonstrate the ability to revise office documents using
proofreading marks.

III. Course Materials

Week 1
I. Introduction to Keyboarding.
The first step to learning proper keyboarding technique is to understand
the layout of the keyboard itself. There are several different types of
keyboard layouts, but the most common is known as the "QWERTY" layout.
With this layout, most usage lays within the top and middle rows of keys,
with the left hand doing approximately 66% of the keystrokes. Once a
person is familiar with the basic keyboard layout, it is time to focus
on the proper typing technique. Before beginning, feet should be flat
on the floor, the back straight against the chair with forearms slanted
at the keyboard. The typist should keep their fingers curved and upright
with their left-hand fingers on the asdf keys, right hand fingers on the

jkl; keys and both thumbs resting on the space bar key. Their eyes should
be focusing on the information they are to type. This may mean they are
looking directly at the computer screen or to the side where a paper
copy or book is located, but not directly at the keyboard or their hands.

II. Types of Computer Keyboard Layout.

There are a few different arrangements of alphabetic, numeric, and
punctuation symbols on keys. These different keyboard layouts arise
mainly because different people need easy access to different symbols,
either because they are inputting text in different languages, or because
they need a specialized layout for mathematics, accounting, computer
programming, or other purposes.
Keyboards are basically of two types:
1. Qwerty: Qwerty refers to the type of keyboard on a standard English.
The name was given from the first six letters on the row above the home
row keys. This layout is most widely used because of its convenience
and universal standard.

2. Dvorak: Dvorak keyboard is the type of keyboard used for speed typing.
The most used letters are arranged in home row which makes it easy to
type. Dvorak is designed differently for left-handed and right-handed
people. It makes typing easier to one hand people.

III. Beginning Keyboarding

Designed for individuals who have little or no training in typing or
keyboarding, this course introduces students to techniques that will
allow them to progress past pecking at the keys. Students memorize the
order of the keys and practice typing for speed and accuracy. The course
stresses typing without looking at the computer keyboard or backtracking
to fix mistakes.

classes. Students may be given a certain period, such as five minutes,
in which to type as much as they can of a certain document; they are
then graded based on speed and accuracy.

Week 5
IV. Word Processing
A. Editing and Proofreading.
No matter how accomplished a writer you are, writing a perfectly
polished document is not something that is going to happen on the
first try. Writing requires an editing stage that is just as vital
as the actual composing of the document. The editing phase is where
the true recursive work happens—writers will read, reread, and
rewrite as many times as needed until the written document is
publishable.
Proofreading is reading and marking final corrections of
terminology, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and voice. Sometimes
writers introduce new errors when revising and editing, so a final
read through for corrections is often necessary before finalizing
a written document. To expedite proofreading, writers and editors
use a system of shorthand marks to communicate changes that should
be made to a document before publication. These are known as
proofreaders' marks.

Week 6 (Continuation of Lesson in Word Processing)

A. Block Style Letter
One of the most common formats used for business correspondences
is the block style business letter—a typewritten form of
communication that is formatted with all parts aligned to the left
margin, hence the name "block." A business letter is used when
corresponding with a representative from a business or
organization. While business correspondences are frequently sent
as email attachments, they are often still sent as faxes or through
the mail, enclosed in a typed envelope.

B. Business Envelope
An envelope is a container in which to send a letter, and a business
envelope is used specifically by businesses. The front (or face)
of an envelope is where the address, return address, and postage
stamp appear. The back of the envelope, usually left blank, is
where the flaps meet to form and seal the envelope. Correctly
addressing a business envelope is crucial, particularly if you are
sending a letter to a large company with many departments. If you
do not include all the needed information, the envelope may take a
long time to reach the correct person or department. If the contents
of your letter are time-sensitive, this could result in lost
productivity or missed deadlines.

C. Email Correspondence
Emails are messages sent and received electronically. Professionals
use emails to communicate a variety of messages, such as scheduling
meetings, requesting information from other employees, and sending
marketing messages to customers. Email communication is an
efficient way to send and receive messages, both internally (within
an organization) and externally.
