Greensboro - Students and staff around campus have been anticipating for the moment where the
New Student Center finally opens. On September 20th at 5pm, students and staff of A&T
gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the New Student Center. Students were able to get a
glimpse of the building and its amenities after four of construction.
During the ceremony, speeches were made by Chancellor Harold Martin, SGA President, and
others who played a big part in the construction and planning of the center.
The first student center opened in 1967 named as the Memorial Student Union. The center was
considered as the “Living room of the University”, where students could lounge and utilize
between classes. The old student center was torn down and moved next to Moore Gymnasium
and the Dome. The project for the New Student was announced 4 years ago directed by Carl
Baker, who is the executive director of the center.
The purpose of the center is to promote an involved community through services, amenities, and
programs that are made available to the campus. Amenities and services such as the information
center, computer stations, conference rooms, recreation rooms, and aggie shuttle services are all
available.
“The Student Center will become one of the most important locations of this campus,” says
Dreshawn Jarmen, the student university activities board President at A&T.
Students walked inside the center with smiles and excitement on their faces while getting a
glimpse of the building. You could see students taking pictures on the bright yellow stairs and
socializing around some of the lounge areas.
“When I first walked in I was amazed and excited because after 4 years of them building and us
students hearing rumors about what will be in there, we finally got a look of what’s inside.” Says
Taylor Crudup, a senior at A&T.
Inside the building the lounge area consists of TVs, video games, pool tables, and other
entertainment. The center’s has cafeteria area and five restaurants inside.
While students got a glimpse of what will be in the building, the center won’t be officially open
until September 27th, 2018. Until then last minute and final changes will be made to make the
New Student Center even better for the Aggies.
