The World’s Biggest Food Fight

What if your whole town had a food fight? Well, that happens in Spain. Every year, people gather in Buñol.
They have a food fight festival called La Tomatina.

What is this all about? First, someone climbs a greasy pole and tries to reach a piece of ham. After that, the
tomato fight begins. Thousands of locals and tourists throw tomatoes at each other. People throw more than
100 tons of tomatoes. The fight lasts one hour. When a bell rings, the food fight ends.

One of the main rules of the festival is to squash the tomatoes before throw- ing them. This way people do not
get hurt. Another rule is that people stop throwing tomatoes when the bell rings. People wear old clothes, and
put on goggles to protect their eyes.

When the festival ends, fire trucks clean the streets with water. Everyone is covered in tomatoes! Some
people wash themselves in the Buñol River or neighbors help wash them with hoses.
