My past accomplishments had help out a lot from where I was and what I am today. I consider myself a compassionate

professional because I never give up my virtues and values in my life that connects my work life and willingly to share

it with my students.

Teaching is not just basically what is in the book but moreover, teaching how that book came into existence,

the countless written texts were products of hard-work, patience, determination and heart. Teach them these things and

I am confident I'll be reading, even in the simplest form of my students’ self-made book-- their life stories. Education

should aim at the balanced growth of the total personality of Man through the training of Man's spirit, intellect, the
rational self, feelings and bodily senses. It is worth mentioning that I am educated and trained in a progressive, critical,

reflective ways of thinking in appreciating and solving things. I have always moulded my students on this basis.

Students must stand up as the faces of heroes of tomorrow “Mga Bagong Bayani” as Mr. Tony Meloto would call them.

I remember in my student days as we were told, “It is the youth who has the spare time, the energy and the enthusiasm.

It is where we get our fresh blood of heroes and martyrs. And yes, I still believe in that, that the young people are the

new heroes, the ones who shall be the face of a new country, strong, patriotic and ever vigilant. However, these young

heroes of tomorrow still need the guidance and wisdom of the Elders of today.

Each theorists’ ideas are independent of each other (they are different ideas), but when put together, they give us a good

overall understanding of how children develop as they age.

1. Personality (Psychosocial) Development Theorist

Sigmund Freud: The Mind / Personality (1856-1939)

Austrian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst

Victorian era: stifling strait-laced morality and attitudes toward sexuality

Believed that the mind was divided into 3 levels of consciousness

Conscious mind (tip of the iceberg - allows individuals to choose their actions based on whether it is right or wrong).

Preconscious mind (memories recalled)

Unconscious mind (represents the individual’s internal wants and desires)

Psychoanalytic Theory: Freud distinguished 3 structures of personality which form the basic parts of human personality

and motivate our behavior:

ID: unconscious inborn biological wants and desires – needs immediate gratification (e.g. sex & aggression)

EGO: realistic part of our personality that tries to balance the ID and SUPEREGO in making socially and morally

acceptable decisions – understands cause & effect – starts to develop at 2 to 3 years of age

SUPEREGO: our moral guide between right and wrong – starts to develop at 6 to 7 years of age
Believed that an individual’s personality develops through a series of stages based on their Ability to control their

internal needs and wants and depends on changes in the distribution of sexual energy. Failure to progress smoothly

through a particular stage can result in adult behaviors fixated with that stage.

Freud distinguished 5 stages:

Oral (Birth – 18 months): Oral gratification/sucking/biting

Adult issues: orally dependent (passivity; smoking)/ orally aggressive (cruel)

Anal (18 mos – 3 yrs): Bowel pleasure/toilet training

Adult issues: anal-retentive (e.g. cleanliness)/anal-expulsive (e.g. sloppiness)

Phallic (3 – 5 yrs): Genital awareness/love-hate relationship with same-sex parent (i.e. Oedipus complex)

Adult issues: selfishness; poor opposite-sex relationships; manipulative

Latency (6 yrs – puberty): Same-sex friends and few opposite-sex friends Adult issues: Lack of close friends

Genital (adolescence): intimate relationships & sexual attraction

Adult issues: Poor sexual relationships; guilt about sexuality; inadequacy

Why are Freud’s ideas significant?

Believed that the experiences children have will have a profound effect on their adult life.

Freud believed that the decisions children make shape the personality they have as teenagers and adults.

Also, caregivers of children should be understanding and empathetic of children’s emotional states. If children are

supported emotionally, then their personality and emotional well-being is likely to be secure and stable.

In refining Freud's theory, Erikson postulated that personality developed in 8 stages, starting in infancy and

ending with old age. Each stage had a unique psychological crisis whose outcome is dependent on how

caregivers and significant others respond to the needs at that stage. If a person has a problem in any of the stages,

they would develop an identity crisis that would affect them later in life.

AGE CONFLICT SUCCESSFUL RESOLUTION

18 months to 3 years Autonomy vs. Shame and The infant achieves a sense of

doubt independence.
4 - 6 years Initiative vs. Guilt The child finds a balance between spontaneity

and restraint. Learns to think

independently.
7 to 12 years Industry vs. Inferiority The child attains a sense of self

confidence. Learns to think about others.

Adolescence Identity vs. Role Confusion The adolescent experiences a unified sense of

self based on a combination of

previous learning.
Young Adulthood Intimacy vs. Isolation The adult forms close personal

relationships.
Middle Adulthood Generativity vs. Stagnation The adult promotes the well-being of

others.
Late Adulthood Integrity vs. Despair The adult enjoys a sense of satisfaction by

reflecting on a life well lived.

This show the map out the journey of my professional identity as a unique process. This process involves the

examination of what I have or have not done, or should I say what I should have done but never do. With the
transformation of existing knowledge to my current knowledge as a beginning teacher to what I am now, has

allowed me to reflect in a deeper way to further sharpen my thinking skills as a classroom teacher.

I have this constant struggle up to today to want to become a better teacher. It will involve learning about

students’ interests, values, concerns and purposes, learning to collaborate with my students to realized mutually

established agendas. This struggle has been bugging me every year when I received feedback from my reporting

officer about my entire performance through my EPMS (Enhanced Performance Management System) review.

Discouraged I will be as it is human nature to do so. However, I tell myself that I must do better the following

year in areas of classroom teaching and helping my students under my charge to learn better. I tell myself

“tomorrow will be better than today” is a motto which I carry with me as I aged by the years.

On a final note, this enables me to identify key moments in my teaching career since I was in the critical

incidents into visual and written stories of identity, knowledge, reflection, and change. My personal opinion is

that narrative is about generating thinking; the thought process to reflect what I did or should do for the

betterment of the future. I hope the narrative in my teaching journey will help me to develop professionally and

grow in the field in many years to come till I retire when I reach the age of sixty.
