Uses of essential oils

1
10/4/2020

Essential oils are consumed in numerous uses;

they are used :

• For their therapeutic actions.

• For flavoring, e.g. oil of lemon.
• In perfumery, e.g. oil of rose
• As starting materials for the synthesis of other
compounds, e.g. oil of turpentine

applied topically
taken internally as dietary
supplements.

Aromatic Uses

Certain essential oils, when diffused in the air, can be very

stimulating while others can be calming and soothing.

Beyond emotional benefits, diffusing essential oils can

purify air of unwanted odors and some airborne pathogens

Topical Uses

essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin and can be

safely applied topically.

The chemical structure of essential oils also allows

them to be absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin
for internal benefit throughout the body.

Essential oils can also be used as dietary supplements

supporting a variety of healthy conditions.

Some essential oils have powerful antioxidant

properties while others help support healthy
inflammatory response in cells.

Mechanism of the biological activities

of essential oils

So far, there is no study that can give us a clear

idea and be accurate on the mode of action of
the essential oils. Given the complexity of their
chemical composition, everything suggests that
this mode of action is complex, and it is difficult
to identify the molecular pathway of action. It is
very likely that each of the constituents of the
essential oils has its own mechanism of action.
