Photorealistic Apple

By: Chris Flynn

In this tutorial, we will explain how to illustrate a photorealistic apple. An apple is an

attractive fruit because it has bright and luscious colors. To create the beautiful and
complex textures of the apple, it will take a considerable amount of time. But don’t
worry, because we will attempt to at least simplify this tutorial for you. Let us get
started!

1. Draw the shape of an apple using the Pen Tool.

2. Add the apple’s stem at the top of it as shown in the image below.

3. To create the real shape of a leaf, use the Pencil Tool. You can draw jagged
margins of the leaf using this tool.

4. Draw the veins of the apple using the Pencil Tool.

5. Select the shape of the apple and fill it with the appropriate color. This color will
be the dominating one. To create some nodes which are editable, go to Object >
Create Gradient Mesh. In the setting window, set number 3 for rows and
columns and click Ok.

6. Select the nodes using the Direct Selection Tool and fill them with orange. To
select a few nodes, hold the Shift key and click on the nodes using Direct
Selection Tool.

7. Select the appropriate node using the Direct Selection Tool and fill it with a
darker shade of red.

8. Select the bottom nodes of the apple and change their colors to a darker one.

9. Create a new node using the Mesh Tool from Tool Box. Select the upper nodes
and make them darker.

10. Create a new node at the left side and fill it with a darker color.

11. Draw some curve lines using the Pen Tool at the top of the shape as shown in
the image below.

12. Select the lines. Go to Brushes > Brush Libraries Menu >
Artistic_PaintBrush and select Dry Brush 6. Go to Transparency Palette
and set its Opacity=20.

13. To create the nodes and blobs of the apple, select the Brush Tool. Go to
Brushes > Brush Libraries Menu > Artistic_Ink and select Fire Ash. To
create the blur in the blobs, go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur and blur
them as necessary.

14. To create the dark shades, draw some shapes using the Pen Tool at the two
sides of the apple. Fill them with black. Go to Transparency Palette, set
Opacity=20 and select Multiply.

15. Select the shapes which were drawn in the last step. To blur them, go to Effect
> Blur > Gaussian Blur and blur them as necessary.

16. Add some blobs using the Blur Tool (used in step 14) but don’t blur them. Draw
a black shape using the Pen Tool, blur and put it on the appropriate position.

17. Select the shape of the apple and make a copy of it (Ctrl+D). Go to
Transparency Palette and set its blending on the Multiply.

18. To create more brightness, draw some shapes on the apple. Make them bright
yellow, then go to Transparency Palette and set on the Soft Light. Set
Opacity=50.

19. Create a texture on the apple using the chalk brush from brush palette. After
drawing some lines, set them in the transparency palette as shown in the image
below.

20. Fill the stem with brown.

21. Create some nodes on the stem using the Mesh Tool and fill them with brighter
colors.

22. To create a concavity at the top of the apple, draw a shape and fill it with the
appropriate color. To blur the edges, go to Effect > Blur > Radial Blur. Select
Zoom from the setting window and set as necessary.

23. Create a smaller copy from the last drawing and put it on the middle. Change its
color to bright green.

24. Fill the leaf with green. To create brightness and darkness on the leaf, draw some
new nodes using the Mesh Tool. Select each nodes using Direct Selection
Tool and fill them with appropriate color as shown in the image below.

25. Select the veins and fill them with green. Go to Variable Profile > Line
Setting and select With Profile 1. After this, the two ends of the lines will
become narrow.

26. Select all the veins and create a copy from them. Change the color of new copy
to green. Put them near the last veins.

27. To create the inner texture of the leaf, draw a shape using the Brush Tool.
Select and send it in the Brush Palette. Select Scatter Brush from the created
window. Go to Scatter Brush and select Tint. Set stroke=pt 0.5 and set as
shown below.

28. Put the last texture on the leaf and select both of them. Go to Transparency >
Option > Make Opacity Mask.

29. Put the texture of the last shape on the leaf such that it will be situated under
the veins.

30. Create a texture as shown in the image below using the Brush Tool and Color
Brushes in the Brush Palette (Brush > Brush Libraries Menu > Artistic_
WaterColor).

31. Change the last shape to create the appropriate texture using Bloat & Pucker
Tool from the Tool Box.

32. Select the outline and put it on the texture. Select the texture and the apple and
go to Object > Clipping Mask > Make.

33. Put the last texture on the apple. Go to Transparency Palette, set
Opacity=80 and select the Soft Light for it.

34. Select the outline of the apple and fill it with Gradient Tool. After this, put it on
the apple.

35. Draw a black ellipse under apple and set Opacity=50. To create a shadow and a
blurring shape, go to Effect > Blur > Gaussian blur.

36. Create a light on the apple. For this, draw a shape and fill it with white using the
Gradient Tool and Palette. Go to Gradient Setting, set Opacity=0 for one
side and set the direction using Gradient Tool from Tool Box. After this, one
side becomes white and gradually becomes colorless.

37. Draw 4 ellipses which are the same in sizes. Fill them with white. For the two
bottom ellipses, set Opacity=70. Select 4 ellipses, go to Effect > Blur >
Gaussian Blur and blur the edges as necessary. You’re done!
