THREE WOMEN IN A LANDSCAPE

(Anita Magsaysay-Ho)
Describe its Subject
It displays three ladies gathering fruit, a symbol of
togetherness within Filipino society, particularly
among women. The scene is near in many trees, the
one woman is getting all the harvested fruits, the
other one is helping to put the fruits in the basket,
and the other one is holding a lever to get the fruits.
Its like a great flow of unity to get the work done
and have a beautiful day.
The Materials
Anita Magsaysay-Ho used egg tempera for her artwork.
The artistic use of tempera is more difficult than oil paints,
Magsaysay-Ho's reinforces this through the use of bold,
desire lines and simplification of forms: kerchiefs tied
around angular faces, swiftly formed arms and legs, yet all
with a strong gestural quality despite their abbreviated
renditions. The materials bring out to the art you'll see it in
the artwork. Yes because you will not call it an arts if you
didn't use different materials in artworks.
The art elements and principles
A three women harvesting fruits, a show of solidarity within the communal nature of Filipino
society particularly amongst the women.

• True artistic calling, blending localised genre scenes with an almost geometrical sense of
modern figuration.

• Decisive lines and simplification of forms: triangular kerchiefs tied around angular faces,
swiftly formed arms and legs, yet all with a strong gestural quality despite their abbreviated
renditions.

• Three Women in a Landscape is similar to other works from this period, showing stylized
figures and strongly coloured interlocking background hues to draw the central image into a
tightly concentrated whole.
• Unifying Features Line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space are some
of the elements of art and design that are organized or composed in a painting
according to the principles of balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern,
rhythm, unity/variety, and other elements of composition. This gives the
painting structure and helps Anita Magsaysay convey her intended message.

• Rhythm is a mixture of parts repeated with little variations, whereas pattern is

a combination of elements repeated in a recurrent and regular order.

• The appeal to the senses of sight or hearing is typically used to categorize

arts. All visual arts, even though a sculpture may also appeal to the sense of
touch, such as painting, sculpture, and architecture, rely on the visual sense of
sight to be appreciated for their aesthetic qualities.
The artist’s style
Anita Magsaysay-Ho was a Filipina painter
who specialized in social realism and post-
cubism in regard to women in Filipino culture.
Magsaysay-Ho's work appeals to modernism
by utilizing more abstract designs and styles
rather than realistic approaches.
