ESSENTIAL QUESTION (PRE-TEST)

What elements, principles and processes are involved in the making of an integrated artwork
such as film or theater play?
The elements, principles and processes that are involved in the making of an integrated artwork such as
and theater play are: Color, differentiates and defines lines, shapes, forms, and space. Even black and
white images have a huge number of different shades of gray. Many amateurs actually confuse the
terms 'color,' 'hue,' and 'value.' Technically color is a general term which applies to all combinations of
color. On the other hand, hue refers to only the pure colors of the spectrum. Form, are three-
dimensional shapes with length, width, and depth. Balls, cylinders, boxes and pyramids are forms. Line,
is one-dimensional and is often used to define edges. Lines also are used to define more complex
shapes. The type of a line, whether horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or curved, greatly determines the
feeling an artist is trying to express in their work. Shape, are created when lines are combined to form a
square, triangle, or circle. Shapes can be organic (irregular shapes found in nature) or geometric (shapes
with strong lines and angles such as circles, triangles, and squares). Space, the area between and around
objects. Increasing or decreasing the amount of space around an object affects the way we view that
object. Texture, the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough or smooth, soft or
hard. Textures are often implied. For instance, a drawing of a rock might appear to have a rough and
hard surface, but in reality, it is as smooth as the paper on which it is drawn. Value, is simply the relative
darkness or lightness of a particular color. It is the contrast between black and white and all the tones in
between. Value can be used with color as well as black and white. Contrast is the extreme changes
between values. Balance is created in a work of art when textures, colors, forms, or shapes are
combined harmoniously. Contrast is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer's attention
and to guide the viewer's eye through the artwork. Movement is the way a viewer's eye is directed to
move through a composition, often to areas of emphasis. Movement can be directed by lines,
contrasting shapes, or colors within the artwork. Emphasis is created in a work of art when the artist
contrasts colors, textures, or shapes to direct your viewing towards a particular part of the image.
Pattern is the repetition of a shape, form, or texture across a work of art. Proportion is created when the
sizes of elements in a work of art are combined harmoniously. Lastly, Unity is created when the
principles of analysis are present in a composition and in harmony. Some images have a complete sense
of unity, while some artists deliberately avoid formal unity to create feelings of tension and anxiety.

1. The word art has its roots in the Latin word ars and the Greek word techne.

2. Prose is a literary form that is not poetry.

3. What art forms are present in the staging of a theatrical play?

The expression of an artistic idea through written lyrics, text, dramatization, and multimedia production
is known as performing art. Performing arts typically necessitate the use of musical theater, dance, and
drama, as well as a fusion of different art forms, such as literary art for the material and visual arts for
stage design.
4. Why is integrative art more and more popular in contemporary times?

Integrative art is popular in contemporary arts because it includes inter-disciplinary art, art research,
development, production, presentation, or artistic creation of work which fully uses two or more art
disciplines to create a work for a specific audience, and with people from different cultures coming into
contact with each other, it is unavoidable that artists will obtain styles and techniques from different
practices. This integration requires the utilization of multiple disciplines to generate an expressive
artwork. Spoken word poetry is a form of modern art. It is when poetry is created to be read aloud on a
stage, usually in a small setting like a coffee shop.

LET’S ANALYZE
Which among the elements in the mural above do you think the artist wants to emphasize? Discuss the
possible techniques and principles the artist applied to the subject to call the attention to it and make it
the focal point of the mural.

There are three elements of art that I’ve notice in the mural: Shape - The elements are placed in an
imaginary triangle, with the 'Angry' Christ in the center. Color - The artist made extensive use of the
colors of red, yellow, and white, which are associated with fire. It implies that the fire represents Christ's
rage as a result of fighting among Christian denominations. Value - You'll observe that not all portions of
the artwork are adequately illuminated. And there two principles of art I’ve also notice, Emphasis - The
artist emphasizes Christ's hands and burning heart with color and value. Balance - The artwork's
composition is in Symmetrical Balance.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

1. Value refers to the lightness or darkness of color.

2. A form is different from shape because it has the added dimension of volume.

3. Informal balance is also called asymmetrical.

4. What type of line is usually associated with dynamism?

The type of line that is associated with dynamism is the diagonal lines.

5. How can you say that a visual artwork has movement?

You can say that an artwork has movement when there is a repetition in elements such as line. Some
pieces of art contain line or brushwork that was made by the artist's physical gestures. Simply by
tracking it with our eyes, we can learn to infer the direction and force of motions and feel them as
"movement." Shapes and their outlines can be constructed to suggest movement, which is further
supported by our eye tracking.

6. When do you say that an artwork has harmony?

You can say an art piece is in harmony when the different parts produce an overall positive impact or
effect. Harmony in visual arts refers to the artwork's unity, specifically in regard to the arrangement of
its pieces, whereas harmony in music refers to the simultaneous sounding or playing of distinct notes to
make a sound. Overall harmony in art is created when the pieces of an artwork come together in a
coherent manner. Certain elements can be repeated while still appearing and feeling as if they are
contributing to a whole. Harmony is not monotony, but it is also not chaos. It is the ideal combination of
the two.

7. How can your knowledge of the elements and principles of art help you in appreciating art better?

Our understanding of the elements and principles of art can help us appreciate art more because it
allows us to describe what an artist has created and examine what is going on in a specific piece. And if
you decide to be an artist who works with strong composition principles, you will be able to create a
more engaging artwork that will be arranged to exhibit a nice rhythm and movement. A solid
understanding of composition is needed for the creation of good artwork.

various artworks. The learning process also aids in learning about important moments in history and
gaining a thorough understanding of what those events entailed. Filipinos can express themselves in a
way that is safe for others to see through contemporary art. It is a kind of self-expression.

artwork must depict contemporary Filipino culture. Remember to integrate various practices, elements,

REFLECT
I find the Elements and Principles of art the most interesting because knowing the elements and
principles is not only important to artists but also to the audience of art as this can enable a deeper
understanding of the artwork. I got 2 checks on “I have a minimal understanding of it” and 1 check
on “I am confident that I can do this with ease” because some of the elements and principles are
already familiar to me so, I was able to understand the topic. I need to improve on “I can identify various
art forms” as well as “I can draw connections between historical and cultural events and various
artworks”. I need to practice on some of them because I was not able to fully understand it. I plan to dig
deeper on the lessons to know more especially the Elements and Principles of arts.
