Brazil is the largest country in both south America and latin America.at 8.5 million
square kilometres and with over 217 million people,Brazil is the world’s fifth-
largest country by area and the seventh most populous. Its capital is Brasilia, and its
most populous city is Sao Paulo. The federation is composed of the union of yje 26
states and the Federal District. It is the largest country to have Portuguase as an
official language and the only one in the Americas; one of the most multicultural
and ethnically diverse nations, due to over a century of mass immigration from
around the world; and the most populous Roman Catholic-majority country.
The word ‘Brazil’ likely comes from the Portuguese word for brazilwood,a tree
that once grew plentifully along the the Brazilian coast. As brazilwood produces a
deep red dye,it was highly valued by the European textile industry and was the
earliest commercially exploited product from Brazil.
The culture of Brazil is primarily Western, being derived from Portuguese
culture,as well as the cultural and ethnic mixing that occurred between the
Indigenous peoples,Portuguese colonizers and Africans. In the late 19th and early
20th centuries,Italians, germans,Japanese, greeks,Russians and etc. settled in
Brazil, playing an important role in its culture as it started to shape a multicultural
and multiethnic society. This diverse cultural background has helped show off
many celebrations and festivals that have become known around the world, such as
the Brazilian carnival and Bumba Meu Boi.The colorful culture creates an
environment that makes Brazil a popular destination for many tourists each
year,around over 1 million.
THE GEOGRAPHY-The geography of Brazil is vast and diverse. It is one of the
world’a largest countries, rhe 5th largest by land area at 8,515,767 km2 and by far in
South America, taking up just over half of that continent’s surface
.Brazil is the tallest country in the world, stretching a north-sorth distance of
4,395km, and 38 degrees of latitude from 5N to 33S,beating Chile to this accolade
by just 95km.The car journey of 5,700km from most northern to southern tips
would take you 3days non-stop. East-West is coincidentally almost the exact same
in terms of distance and travel time.Topographically,Brazil is relatively
flat, especially in view of South America having the world’s longest, and second
tallest, mountain range. But the Andes are in the west of the continent, and Brazil in
the east.Instead, the country is essentially divided into three sections. The vast, low
lying Amazon river basin of the north-west,the equally vast upland plateau, known
as the planalto central,of the east and south, and the narrow Atlantic coastal
strip. The country’s highest point is Pico da Neblina,on the border with Venezuela
in the far north-west,at 2,995km.In the terms of this situation,Brazil dominates the
south American continent. The atlantic ocean makes up its entire eastern flank.
Brazil’s climate zones are mostly tropical, meaning warm to hot year round, with
some subtropical and temperate zones in the south.A tropical rainforest which is
hot and wet year round exists in the Amazon basin of the north-west,and also along
parts of the atlantic coast. The graphs are similar, but the causes for these two areas
are very different.
FOLKLORE AND RELIGION-Brazilian folklore involves a lot of
dances, stories, religious rituals.Characters involve the Boitata, the Boto Cor de rosa
and Bumba Meu Boi,which has increased the famous june festival in Northeastern
Brazil. And Brazilan folklore is connected with its religion. The Brazilian’s religion
is Christianism.More than the half of the population are Roman
Catholics.Catholicism was represented by the Portuguese Jesuits, who appeared in
1549 during the colonization with the mission of transforming the Indigenous
people. The society of Jesus played a big role in the formation of of Brazilian
religious identity. In last years Brazilian society has witnessed a growth in
Protestantism.Between 1940 and 2010,the percentage of Roman Catholics
decreased. But the various protestant denominations rose more.
LANGUAGE-Brazil’s official language is Portuguese. The 99 percent of the
population speak this language. It is one of the strongest elements of national
identity.Only a few immigrants and some Amerindian groups dont use Portuguese
for comminication.
