We have been introduced to crayons,
pencils and paper even before we
reached kindergarten. There may be
some of us who, out of honest creativity,
used the walls of our homes as our
drawing pad. Then, while our moms
clean the walls in our living room, we
were drawing funny figures on the
kitchen table. The question is: Is art all
about drawings?
Who among you use musical
beats when memorizing for a
quiz? Some students find it
useful when studying because
the beats help them
remember the terms that they
are trying to memorize.

 Can you think of other art forms aside from those
mentioned above?
 What about the jingles used during the election
campaign period?
 The clothes that you wear everyday?
 The novel that you are reading during your free time?
 The theme song of your favorite koreanovela?
 Your favorite vlogger in YouTube?
 The hairstyle that you are going to wear on Friday for
your night out with friends?
 The selfie photo that you are about to post in Instagram?

means craftsmanship, skill, mastery of form exist
between material and technique. - A. Tan

expression

ourselves

understand before

gratification
Strictly speaking, the term
"contemporary art" refers to art made and
produced by artists living today. Today's

aspects of (collective) life as opposed to one
person's point of view or experience. Viewers
can often relate in some way to social art and
are sometimes even influenced by it.

consumer purchases.

of identity and ideological
connection to specific political
views, parties and/or people.
HISTORICAL FUNCTION
The original use of a
building before any
restoration or alteration.
CULTURAL FUNCTION
It refers to the sum of human beings'
life ways, their behaviour, beliefs,
feelings, thought; it connotes
everything that is acquired by them
as social beings..

suggest and tell the story of a religion.
They keep religious traditions alive and
make it easier for individuals to visualize
a concept or event that is otherwise
difficult to imagine through the use of
mere words

The Elements of Art
Space – defined as a void, an emptiness which can either be
positive or negative
▪ Positive Space = a space enclosed in a space
▪ Negative Space = denotes the opposite
Line – the extension of a point, a short or long mark drawn or
carved on a surface.
▪ Direction = vertical, horizontal
diagonal
▪ Character = jagged, curved, series of dots or broken lines
Shape and Form – formed when ends of a line meet. It can
either be geometric (angular) or organic (curvy)
Form is like shape only that it is three-dimensional. For
instance, the square is a shape; the cube is a form
Color – a sensation created by visible wavelengths
of light caught in a prism that creates a mood or
tone
Value – the degree of lightness and darkness of a
color
- it is called pitch in music
which is the highness and lowness of a tone
Texture – is the surface of an artwork which can
be actual or tactile (it can really be felt by touch;)
or it can be simulated or illusory (which means it
can only be seen not felt).
Balance refers to the visual weight of the elements
of the composition. It is a sense that the
painting feels stable and "feels right." Imbalance
causes a feeling of discomfort in the viewer.
Balance can be achieved in 3
different ways:
1.Symmetry, in which both sides
of a composition have the same
elements in the same position,
as in a mirror-image, or the two
sides of a face.
2. Asymmetry, in which the
composition is balanced due to the
contrast of any of the elements of art.
For example, a large circle on one
side of a composition might be
balanced by a small square on the
other side
3. Radial symmetry, in which
elements are equally spaced
around a central point, as in the
spokes coming out of the hub of
a bicycle tire.
Contrast is the difference
between elements of art in a composition,
such that each element is made stronger
in relation to the other. When placed next
to each other, contrasting elements
command the viewer's attention.
Emphasis is when the artist
creates an area of the
composition that is visually
dominant and commands the
viewer's attention. This is often
achieved by contrast.
Movement is the result of using the elements of art
such that they move the viewer's eye around and
within the image. A sense of movement can be
created by diagonal or curvy lines, either real or
implied, by edges, by the illusion of space, by
repetition, by energetic mark-making.
Pattern is the uniform repetition of
any of the elements of art or any
combination thereof. Anything can be
turned into a pattern through
repetition. Some classic patterns are
spirals, grids, weaves.
Rhythm is created by movement implied
through the repetition of elements of art in a
non-uniform but organized way. It is related to
rhythm in music. Unlike pattern, which
demands consistency, rhythm relies on variety.
Unity/Variety You want your
painting to feel unified such that
all the elements fit together
comfortably.
