CAD Import & Mill Advanced Page: 61

Tutorial 1: Toolpath Creation Step 2: Rough Out The Part Using Surface High Speed Area Roughing

2.2 Set the Toolpath Control Page

Use this page to set tool containment parameters and the Strategy used in the surface high speed toolpath. Containment
boundaries are used to control the tool's position around the boundary of your part. The boundary is a closed set of
wireframe curves which enclose the area to be machined. Mastercam will not create tool motions that violate the
boundary, regardless of the selected cut surfaces. For Area roughing, if a boundary was not specified Mastercam will
generate a min/max boundary around the selected drive surfaces. This boundary can be adjusted.

♦ From the Tree view list, select Toolpath Control.

♦ In the Boundary chains area, enable Include silhouette boundary.
♦ In the Strategy area, enable From outside as shown.

From outside sets the toolpath to start from the outside and work its way towards the inner boundary.

Page: 62 CAD Import & Mill Advanced

Tutorial 1: Toolpath Creation Step 2: Rough Out The Part Using Surface High Speed Area Roughing

2.3 Setting the Tool page

The Tool page allows you to select a tool, set the feeds and speeds, enter a comment about the operation, and set other
general toolpath parameters.

♦ To select the tool, click on the Select library tool button as shown.

♦ Disable Filter Active and click on the # to list the tools based on their numbers.

♦ Select the OK button to exit the Tool Selection dialog box.

♦ Add a comment in the Comment area to identify the toolpath in the Toolpaths Manager and also in the NC
file.

Note: The feeds and spindle speed are based on the tool definition. You can overwrite them with the feeds and
speed that you want to use based on the machine, the tool material and part material. The following values
in Figure: 2.3.1 are just a suggestion. During this tutorial we will modify them.

Page: 64 CAD Import & Mill Advanced

Tutorial 1: Toolpath Creation Step 2: Rough Out The Part Using Surface High Speed Area Roughing

♦ The Tool page should look as shown in Figure: 2.3.1.

Figure: 2.3.1

CAD Import & Mill Advanced Page: 65

Tutorial 1: Toolpath Creation Step 2: Rough Out The Part Using Surface High Speed Area Roughing

2.4 Set the Cut Parameters page

Use this page to set the toolpath parameters including stepdown, stepover, corner rounding settings and distance in
which to keep the tool down.

♦ Select the Surface parameters tab and change the parameters as shown.

Optimize cut order keeps tool in the local area until all depth cuts are complete. It reduces the number of
rapid moves in the toolpath.
Stepdown controls how the tool steps down in Z in non-shallow areas.
Add cuts adds cuts to shallow areas. Mastercam uses an adaptive stepdown procedure to calculate the cuts.
Keep tool down within sets the gap setting for motion between toolpaths.
XY stepover controls how the tool steps in the XY tool plane.

2.5 Set the Trochoidal motion page

♦ Set the Trochoidal motion to Off if needed.

Page: 66 CAD Import & Mill Advanced

Tutorial 1: Toolpath Creation Step 2: Rough Out The Part Using Surface High Speed Area Roughing

2.6 Linking Parameters page

The Linking Parameters control how the tool moves between cutting passes that require rapid moves.

♦ From the Tree view list, select the Linking Parameters page and make sure that the parameters are set as
shown.

Clearance plane sets the Z-safe height for the tool to clear any obstacles.

Part clearance sets the minimum distance for tool motion above the part.

Retract method set to Full Vertical Retract creates a vertical retract move to the part clearance height.

Linear entry/exit values are used to extend the toolpath at the beginning and end of cut. Extension is located
after the entry arc and before the exit arc.

Fitting method determines how toolpaths are modified to fit inside boundaries, walls, and other obstacles.

Minimize trimming retracts as close to the surface as possible, maintaining sufficient distance to fit an
entry/exit arc.

Max Trimming Distance limits trimming for non-horizontal passes. Set this value at least as large as the
entry/exit arc radius.

CAD Import & Mill Advanced Page: 67

Tutorial 1: Toolpath Creation Step 2: Rough Out The Part Using Surface High Speed Area Roughing

2.7 Set the Arc Filter/Tolerance parameters

Use this page to control the toolpath tolerances. When you activate line and arc filtering, Mastercam replaces very small
moves within the defined line/arc filter tolerance with larger ones wherever possible.

♦ From the Tree view list, select the Arc Filter/Tolerance and enable Line/Arc Filtering Settings.
♦ Set the Tolerance Distribution for Cut tolerance to 30% and the Line/Arc tolerance to 70% as shown.

Line/Arc Filtering Settings replaces very small moves within the defined line/arc filter tolerance with larger
ones wherever possible.

Line/arc filtering significantly reduces the number of NC blocks in the post, and may improve the machined
precision of the part as well as its surface quality.

♦ Select the OK button to exit Surface High Speed Toolpath - Area Roughing Parameters.

Page: 68 CAD Import & Mill Advanced

Tutorial 1: Toolpath Creation Step 3: Backplot The Toolpaths

STEP 3: BACKPLOT THE TOOLPATHS

Backplotting shows the path the tools take to cut the part. This display lets you spot errors in the program before you
machine the part. As you backplot toolpaths, Mastercam displays additional information such as the X, Y, and Z
coordinates, the path length, the minimum and maximum coordinates, and the cycle time.

♦ Make sure that the toolpaths are selected (signified by the green check mark on the folder icon). If both
operations are not selected, choose the Select all operations icon.

♦ Select the Backplot selected operations button.

♦ In the Backplot panel, enable Display with color codes, Display tool and Display rapid moves icons as
shown.

♦ You can step through the Backplot by using the Step forward or Step back buttons.
♦ You can adjust the speed of the backplot.
♦ Select the Play button to run Backplot.
