I was wondering if anyone knew any sorts of books or websites that had good and reliable material
for the history of classical guitar. I would like to know an extensive amount of history and evolution
of the guitar, and that will help me understand the guitar more. if anyone had some ideas of good
books or resources, I would greatly appreciate the input.
Thank you,
Devon

You could start with Julian Bream's DVD called Guitarra, which provides a history and evolution of
the guitar in Spain. It is informative, educational, and features some amazing playing by Bream!

There is also a bit of information about composers for the guitar if you click on "History of the
Classical Guitar" at the top of this page.

I haven't checked, but there is probably quite a bit of information on Wikipedia, and Wiki articles
usually have an extensive list of sources and further links.

In fact if you do a search for Tyler Sparks you find all relevant threads

I came across lots of information on the oxfordmusiconline website, this is by far one of the best
sources for researching classical and early music.
There was also several books I wanted to use but could not find copies of in nearby libraries but
some useful books they did have were
Bukofzer, M. (1947). Music In The Baroque Era (From Monteverdi to Bach). New York, NY: WW
Norton & Company
Wade, G. (2001). A Concise History of the Classical Guitar. USA: Mel Bay Publishing

I did look at that, it was very good but like you said, brief... Also if I click on the some of the
composers names to look at some history of them, the text is in Spanish. Is there a way to change
the text to English?

Are you talking about Mr. Delcamp's link, Devon? If so, I don't know why he chose Spanish for the
texts. Probably because he's always trying to find ways to pump up the Spanish language forum,
which should be the most active forum but is the least active.
I'm a mini-moderator on the other language forums, so I have an add-on for Google translate. There
are a number of other free translation plug ins or add ons that you could find.

This is probably mentioned somewhere on one of the threads referenced above, but I like The Art
and Times of the Guitar by Frederic V. Grunfeld. It's a wonderfully interesting book—now out of
print, I believe, but there should be plenty of used copies available.

I recently bought an excellent book: The Classical Guitar Book: A Complete History - published by
Backbeat Books.
It is a large format book, 126 pages with foldout pages and beautiful colour illustrations. It goes
into every name that you have heard
I opened the book now - Ramirez 1912 model with a beautiful photo and specifications, picture of
Manuel Ramirez. Another random page: A 1958 Fleta. Another one: foldout page with a 1983
Contreras.
Guitars, Luthiers, Composers, Performers - all in one book. And really worth to put on your coffee
table.
Best regards,
Malan
